Hi everyone. My name is Megan and I'm here in Granville, Ohio. I don't remember how I stumbled across this website but I think it was meant to be. I didn't grow up on a farm but did spend a lot of time on my cousins'farm as a girl and have always hoped for some land and a life that is more connected to the earth. I spent many years in Columbus, Ohio teaching childbirth classes, being a doula and creating bellycasts of pregnant mothers. Just last year a couple from childbirth class asked me to move to their small town and be their son's nanny. In exchange for nanny services, I live in a home that they own on 11 acres and am able ot start living out some of my farm girl dreams. We started a good sized vegetable garden, which fed more to the groundhogs than it did us but we learned a lot. We're hoping to get some chickens soon. My husband and I have lots of ideas and projects we want to do. We love learning to do many crafty/handy things ourselves. I have 3 children, 8, 3, and 1 and 2 step-duaghters 10 and 12. We want so much more for them than our current commercial-driven culture is able to provide or teach. I would love to make connections with some of you and gain your friendship and a bit of your knowledge. If anyone is interested in seeing a little of what I do my website is:

www.birthingthemother.com

Some of it is under construction, but it is a little bit of what I am passionate about. Well, I can't wait to read more of your posts!

Hi Megan and welcome! It sounds like you will fit in here just fine! I looked at your website, it is very nice. One question, what is a doula? Is that like a midwife? Sorry to be so ignorant.

If you have any tips for groundhogs please post them! I don't know what is chewing on my crops but something is! One of my tomatoes had a chunk the size of a two-year-old's mouth bitten out of it! My husband says to stay up at night outside with a flashlight and a shotgun, but I think that's a little extreme.

Hi Brenda!
A doula is someone who supports a mother through her labor and birth, physically, emotionally, and gives her information should she need to make some decisions. But a doula can't intervene medically the way a midwife can, they are just there for support.

As far the bites in your tomatoes goes, it could hornworms. They have been taking huge bites out of mine. Sometimes almost half a tomato is eaten and then I find some droppings and sure enough there is a big, fat, green camoflauged hrnworm sitting on the stem nearby. Good luck and thanks for the hello!

It's a pleasure to meet you, Meghan! I had to laugh at your garden & groundhog story and I certainly can understand where you're coming from regarding the commercially-driven culture. I'm glad you found this site and I look forward to getting to know you!

Welcome Meghan! You are going to love it here, these gals are the best. We had trouble with groundhogs a couple of years ago and all I can say is invest (or create, like we did) in a good fence. Ours is old telephone poles and 5 ft. chicken wire. So far so good this year. Keep us posted on you "farming" adventures, we love to hear them.

Megan, you are probably right about the hornworms, as I picked two big green worms off the stems of a couple of plants a few days ago- one little, one big. The leaves continue to disappear off the plants, but I can't find any more of them sticking to the stems! So help me, when I do, they are going to get "CRUNCHED"! I have been checking them hourly today looking for the dumb things...

I scared a baby rabbit out of my zuchini patch early this morning. I might have to invest in some fence too!

My husband keep asking me why I don't just buy my vegetables at the grocery and this week I am having a hard time coming up with an answer, between the weeds, heat, bugs, and animals. Maybe it is that commercial-driven culture you mentioned that I am fighting, goodness knows it sure would be easier!

One of our good friends is having a doula at the birth of her baby her husband just died in a plane crash a few months ago. I don't want to say this is a replacement person but it sort of is. For the husband who just can't be there to make the mother more at home and comfortable. I think that is neat. I hope you sit a spell and enjoy your stay.

have a lovely day and may God bless you and keep you safe
