I just found out that Kindergarten around here does not start at 5 like I had thought it did. It starts at 6. That means that Nora will have 2 more years at the private Preschool. I was SO looking forward to using that tuition money for something else...like debt...

It's a great school and for the most part we really love it- but I am just astounded at how much money flows out for the child care. But this year she is in the "Big Kids" classroom at the Preschool so I am excited that she will be working on more advanced projects and should start learning to read.

Do you know why they don't start until 6? Or have they just cut kindergarten out of their budget and go straight to first grade? I'm asking because wouldn't it put them a year behind all the way through school and into college?

Alee-
I would double check your state laws. In most states they are not "required" to provide kindergarten, however as a parent and taxpayer when your child reaches the age of 5 you have the right to enroll them in school. Sometimes as Julie said- they "cut" it due to budget constraints. If for nothing else I would investigate to find out the "Law" so that at least you are a well informed parent. Good luck to you.

Does this have to do with her birth month? I know here they have to be in the 6 mos before their 6th birthday to start at 5.

Hi Ladies!

I took your sage advice and called to verify the information I was given by another parent. They DO start at 5 here. As long as they are 5 before September 15th they can start. PHEW!! She will be five and a half by the time school starts so we are good! I didn't like the idea of her starting kindergarten at 6 which would really be six and a half for her! That is very late!

They have a whole Elementary school in my town devoted to Kindergarten. After kindergarten they go to the schools closest to their houses. So I will be dropping her off at the Elementary for the first year and then we can walk to the elementary for her first grade year (it's about 3 blocks away) but by then we might have our farm so I might be giving her a ride in. We'll see!

Oh good! I'd hate for her to be bored because she was older and and more advanced.
