As I have been paging through the chat rooms, I don't think I have seen one yet about sharing "Home Remedies" with each other. I have been able to pick up several ideas with regards to gardening, and items found in the home to use with regards to making and keeping your garden healthy, but how about items we use every day with in our own homes? Not only would this help with keeping us "green", and safing our environment, but also this would be another way to keep the farmgirl spirit alive. How do you fellow farmgirls sisters feel about sharing ideas on something like this? OK I will start... I found an interesting way to remove product build up from your hair. I have tried this, and it leaves the hair very soft and shiney. Take 1-2 tablespoon of baking soda, and mix it well with a galon of rinse water. After washing your hair, and prior to conditioning, rinse with the mixture. You may want to rewash your hair prior to conditioning. This should remove any hairspray or product build up on your hair, use weekly, or as desired. So who's next?....... I just thought this would be a fun way to see what others have to offer.

Hi Sharon! I use baking soda on so many things. I clean my sinks and teapots with it, I have used it on my hair before along with apple cider vinegar. I use sugar as a face scrub, just mix it in with my face wash, my dermatologist actually told me about that one as I have such sensitive skin, he said it actually is better than most face scrubs out there. I use coconut oil as an eye cream and makeup remover, nothing better in my opinion. Just a few things I do, looking forward to seeing what other ladies have to share.

I just have to let you all know I have discovered Braggs apple cider vinegar. I came home last Monday with a horrible sinus headache. Stayed in bed for two days bad! Anyway, I put the ACV and equal parts water, heated on the stove and steamed for five min. Also made a tea with two tbl spoons acv and equal local honey with 8 oz water, heated and sipped every day since Mon and I'm feeling sooooo much better.

Thank you both for the wonderful suggestions! I am definitely going to use baking sodatry more for cleaning, and am going to try the sugar scrub tonight, thank you for sharing. I also saw that's using half a lemon with coarse salt to scrub by cutting boards not only cleans them, button also keeps them fresh, keep the ideas coming!!! Sharon FG sister # 3239

I am a new farm Girl and your home products that you recomend using especially the soda for cleansing hair was something I will try.One that I share with my friends here in the South where we have wasp during the summer months is when you are stung, put a penny on top of the sting and tape with a band-aid, and the copper in the penny will keep the pain away and the next morning you will not even know you were stung. I hope I am on the same page as you because I am learning all of this. Help me!

Hi Peggy! Welcome and thanks for the wasp info. I am like a magnet for those buggers, I get stung at least once or twice a year, I am outside a lot. I am taping your tip to my fridge for when it happens again. You are doing great and going to really love it here, so many great ladies to meet :)

Hi Peggy, and all, I am a new farmgirl from Colorado, the western side where we have just about every kind of stinging wasp, hornet and yellow jacket. If you dab on a little peppermint essential oil before taping on the penny, it works even better. I was stung 2 weeks ago in my garden, it seems the little buggers love globe artichoke plants (!?!), and within an hour it wasn't even swollen anymore. Jennifer, are you mixing the soda with the cider vinegar before applying it to your hair? This sounds intriguing. I also use coconut oil for eye cream, mixed with a bit of olive oil and a calendula extract made with dry flower tops out of my garden. Works great, costs nothing, and makes me feel like a successful human! I am going to try making a salve with comfrey and beeswax for external skin application...any tips? Rain K

Hi Rain! I love your name :) I make a baking soda paste with tea or water and just work gently through scalp (maybe 1/2 c or more soda in cup of warm tea, or water, I have long hair) then rinse with apple-cider vinegar. I don't do it that often, wish I could totally go no shampoo. I am going to try the Lush shampoos, I have heard they are great! The vinegar smell icks me out, but once my hair starts to dry it is gone. My hair is so shiny after! For some reason I can't use olive oil on my skin, but the coconut oil is a life saver for me! It is so great you know how to do that with your calendula.

Jennifer, I tried the sugar scrub last night, How Awesome!! my skin felt so smoothe, will definitely have to add that to my regimen. I am just curious, how much cider vinegar do you use to rinse your hair? I remember trying this when I was a kid, and I thought I fried my hair, I may have used too much. I also use vitamin E oil around my eyes, and have noticed a decrease in "age lines". Thanks for the info:)

Hi Sharon! I take a large cup (32oz. or so) and go 1/3 vinegar and the rest water. Full strength vinegar would be too strong I think, plus I can't stand the smell :) I love the natural oil for the eye area, these ideas are great!

I use apple cider vinegar as a rinse on my hair--I tried shampooing with baking soda but was losing too much hair. Now I use a "natural" brand that I can get at Target. When I feel nauseous, it helps to take a peppermint tea bag and sniff it. The peppermint smell settles the stomach. Cindy

Cindy, I never thought of smelling a peppermint tea bag for nausea, As a Home Health RN, I am always looking for ideas to tell patient's rather than pushing another pill for a symptom. I will definitely try this myself, and refer it to my patients, Thanks! And thanks Jennifer for the vinegar to water ratio, I am going to try this tomorrow. So Many great ideas, ...I love it! Onions believe it or not are useful things! If you get stung slice an onion and put it over the sting. It will draw out the poison and take away the red and the pain. They are also really good for fevers. Put onion in your socks and it will draw the fever out of your head.
If you are burnt (minor not in need of a hospital type burn) egg whites coated on the burn is supposed to help. So is honey. I know lavendar oil does.
Headache? Peppermint oil. Tummy ache? Peppermint or chamomile oils, ginger chews. Muscle spasms? Helichrysum oil.
Excuse the mess & the noise, my children are making happy memories |

For anyone who has ever managed to burn something in a pot or pan .... (if you haven't, I want to know your secret) ... I have yet another use for that "miracle worker" - Baking Soda. Toss a goodly amount of baking soda over the burned stuff in your pot (or pan) and add hot water just to cover. Let it soak overnight (or a little longer if it's really bad) and chances are you won't have to use any extra effort to clean it easily.
I've had to repeat the procedure once or twice on a really tough burn - but all I can say is - no more scrubbing with Brillo pads trying to do away with burned on gunk. It's amazing.

I am kinda new around here too. But I so enjoy reading all you ladies have to share. I have not read all there is to read but I was wanting to share something here. Hope it is not a repeat.
I take a windex type bottle and add 1/2 cup of dawn dish detergent and then fill the bottle with white vinegar. This is the best bathroom cleaner you will ever use. Your chrome will shine like never before. And any soap scum you have will be gone for good. I have even used this on clothes for stains.

Honey can be used as a topical antibiotic. Aloe Vera straight from the plant is good for almost any skin condition. Just break off a piece and squeeze out the juice. I just rub it straight from the plant onto the skin. I even use it on scratches and scraps on the horses.
Thoughts are things choose the good ones. |

Kim that's a great recipe! I'm giving that a try too. I've been making a bathroom scrub with dish soap (or liquid castille soap like Dr Bronners) mixed with baking soda.
Also, I make a tea when I'm sick - 3 cups water and 3 cloves garlic, peeled and sliced, brought to a boil. Once it boils, take it off the heat, strain it and add juice of half a lemon and honey to taste. Drink it warm 1/2 cup at a time through the day and you'll knock out pretty much anything. It's kinda gnarly, but just cowboy up and swig it. It's worth it.

Wow!! I haven't been able to check in for a while, I love all of the ideas posted!. Kim, thanks for the bathroom cleaner recipie! That is one to definitely try. I have used Dawn for so many things around the house too. It makes a great car wash, as it does not spot or leave a film after rinsing. I have also used it to pretreat any stains prior to washing clothes. Cate, thanks for the "sickness" tea also, with a 4 y/o in the house, they seem to bring every germ home from school and daycare. I will be whipping up a batch today, as I am feeling slightly under the weather! Sharon |
