Hi out there, I am looking for any knowledge of helping my little 4 year old feel better. I am planning to visit the Doc if this goes on tomorrow, but is there any relief he can get from his hives? They are not itching him, but burning and hurt. I gave him an oatmeal bath, but am afraid to put anything on it just because it hurts him so much. I thought of aloe. Or what about milk?
Still trying to figure out what has caused it. He tried kiwi fruit this week. Don't know if that is it or something in the desert. Anyhow, thanks! : )

I LOVE chickweed salve, you can usually find it at a health food store. I had a problem with hives as a kid and that is what my mom got for me. I use it for my kids too!
Not sure how true it is but sometimes people who have a sensitivity or allergy to latex have to be careful with kiwi. Don't quote me on that though but I remember a lady telling me that when I mentioned that I have a sensitivity to latex. But I'm fine with banana peels but sometimes my lips burn if I eat too much kiwi. Not sure. Good luck!

THANK YOU Countrymommy!! I am going to get some chickweed salve to keep in my cupboard. I found out it was the penicillin he was on for a tick bite! He'd never had a problem with it before. So he's off of it and the hives are all gone. I had never seen hives that hurt like that.
Anyhow..I am sorry to anyone, if this has been repeated before, I did look for it and then decided to make a post so that I could know right away. Anyhow..thanks!! |

Just out of curiosity was it the Penicillin HCI? I had a severe reaction to a new variety of penicillin with HCI at the end. Since then I can't have penicillin because of the reaction but I had been fine with regular old plain penicillin before so I was wondering if it was the plain old stuff or that hci stuff. Glad you found out what it was!!!

Lavender and chamomile oil will usually take care of any itchy spots. Take a pint jar and fill it with olive oil, sweet almond oil, or grapeseed oil (all carrier oils), and add 10-20 drops lavender essential oil and 5-10 drops chamomile essential oil. Mix well & keep in a dark, cool place (medicine cabinet works fine). This will also take care of razor burn, mosquito bites, menses cramps...anything where a little extra relief is needed. If you want, you can use a reusable cloth tea bag and add dried or fresh lavender and chamomile flowers to the bag, then leave in the oil in a sunny spot for a few days til the oil takes on the scent of the herbs. Take out the flowers and use as the oil made with essential oil. Just a little bit is needed--use topically & rub it in anywhere you need it.

I'll have to look into that chickweed salve. I break out in hives often. :( It's horrible.

I second the lavandar oil, but make sure it's essential oil and not the kind just added frangrance to olive oil.
Also on the penicillin, always ask your pharmacist when he is prescribed antibiotics from now on if it's related at all to penicillin, sometimes even though it's in my records and I always verbally tell my drs that I am allergic to penicillin they still prescribe medications that are related to it. I get hives with the penicillin but some of the related ones my throat swells shut! So I wouldn't chance him ever getting any antibiotics even related to penicillin from now on.

Totally Heather! They actually did that to me once in the hospital with baby #1! I looked at the nurse and I lifted up my arm with the bright red allergy band and said you're not giving that to me. (It was penicillin because I had tested strep-b postitive). Apparently she wasn't looking where she was going and it was supposed to go to the room next door. . . That would NOT have been good. I never thought about making sure about seeing if any medicine is related to penicillin though. I will remember that next time I have to take some medicine, you can be sure I will ask the pharmacist!!! Good thinking!!!

Yeah it's happened to me more then once. Pharmacist are the best ones to ask. Thankfully if I go to a pharmacy most "good" ones will say before I even ask, that they have in my records I am allergic to penicillin and what the dr rx was related. However, yeah my accident with the related one was also at the hospital and that's when my throat swelled shut! So now I am super proactive in asking every time.
