This is only my second (recent) year with a garden. We haven't had a garden for almost ten years so I'm a bit rusty with all this. What kind of tomatoes do you grow?
I grew heirloom Arkansas Travelers this year. They have grown by leaps and bounds and are threatening to take over the garden. My Arkansas Travelers are traveling all over. Silly me, I thought I could stake them with 3 foot tall 2" x 2" wooden stakes. They're almost as tall as me (5'5")! I'm already planning next year's garden and I'm pondering as to whether I want to save the seeds from these tomatoes or not. What kind do you grow? Do you like the variety you grow?

I am addicted to tomatoes! I always grow about 8 different varieties but my absolute favorite (this is my second year growing them) hands down is Violet Jasper. They are a salad size super sweet and tasty heirloom type..I just love them. They are pretty too...violet with red stripes! I like Arkansas Travelers too..didn't grow them this year but they do grow super well and are tasty. Another favorite is Pineapple...beautiful and big and yummy!

| I always grow Amish Paste (plum/paste)and Reisentraube Cherry). Then I grow usally about 6 other varieties but they very from year to year. The amish are travelers too but produce a great paste tomato. The Reisentraube are in my greenhouse this year and are about 6 feet tall by 6 feet wide! Great flavor from them. |

For years I planted tomatoes next to my garage with resounding success. We don't eat tomatoes, but since they grew so well I planted them and gave them away to friends and family. This year I decided to plant potatoes and sunflowers instead. Well...imagine my surprise when I discovered one "lone" tomato plant growing among all my potato plants!
I have no idea how it got there, but it is growing strong and even has tomatoes on it-

I love nothing better than the cherokee purple tomato! It is an heirloom and was actually a wild tomato in my region. There are still places where it grows wild in our local state park. I do have to warn you. It tends to get big and wild in my garden, but is so delicious it is worth it!

I am looking for any advice on growing tomatoes. Mine used to do great, and I haven't changed a thing, not even the place where they are in the garden. I get lots of green tomatoes but they never ripen, and then by August, the plant starts to wither and brown (despite watering).
I tried to pick some and put them on the deck railing to ripen but the chipmunks nibbled on them.
What am I doing wrong???
Why won't they turn red anymore? |

This year I grew Patio Princess, Napa Grape, Sweet 100, Italian Ice (they are pale ivory when ripe), Green Envy (dark green when ripe), Green Zebra and Better Boy. They are all producing like crazy.

Shelly...
Add lots of manure from all sources you can this fall and let it sit all winter. Then in the spring till it in. Worked for me! I used horse, cow, goat, rabbit, and chicken. It was a super easy fix for our garden.

Angela,
I added cow manure in the spring, as well as a layer of new soil. I had probably a hundred cucumbers! But neither my tomatoes or zucchini produced much this year. I am going to go get some chicken manure to put on in September. |

So many good ideas for tomatoes! I'm taking notes like mad. I want to try them all. I think the Violet Jasper would be fun to try as well as the Cherokee purple tomato, Italian Ice, oh...I think I'll plant them all! I've heard of the sweet 100 and the Amish paste tomatoes. Oh, and Melody...we have some volunteer tomatoes from last year too. I'm letting them go and see what happens. We have harvested the very first of our tomatoes today. There is nothing like the taste of a tomato ripened on the vine!
