We have been using white vinegar as our fabric softener fro some time now, but I have noticed it is leaving a not-so-pleasant lingering scent on my husband law enforcement (polyester) uniforms and all our (cotton) t-shirts. I use 1/4 cup for a large load at the most, and I am not pouring it directly on the clothes. I am wondering if it has something to do with the sweat, because I notice its the clothes that we work hardest in that smell the worst, but its not a sweat smell that's coming out, its a sour lingering kind of...I don't know. I didn't notice that when we used store bought fabric softener. I tried using less and less vinegar but its not helping. Any other ideas for an alternative fabric softener that isn't vinegar?

It sounds like there is a build up of something in the clothes and the vinegar is trying to attack it but isn't able to get it all out. Have you tried doing a wash with ammonia to try to strip out the clothes?

| I think Alee is correct. It might be the vinegar trying to break down whatever it is that's smelling. My daughter had a similar problem with her children's clothes and we poured white vinegar directly onto the smelly areas and then washed them for a long cycle with her homemade detergent and vinegar as softener. Took all the smellies out. If you're using an HE washer, maybe until you get it all out, you could put fewer clothes in at once and use a long cycle. |

| Also, if you use a dryer, try using the wool dryer balls. They've worked really well for me to remove the static electricity from our clothes here in dry, dry, dry West Texas. |
