We belong to a CSA and have an organic delivery service so I'm eating a LOT more veggies and fruit than I used to (we grew just a few things) but I'm feeling TERRIBLE. Not to be too graphic but for the last few weeks I've either had extreme gas (even under my ribs!) or sudden severe cramping and loose bowels after almost every meal. Seems like this has started since I'm consuming more and more veggies in my diet and less meat. Seems crazy--I'm eating better and my body is in revolution against me?

Yesterday, I thought I might be having a kidney infection--my back was SO sore on the right side, like someone had punched me for 3 days straight and this band of "swelling" was all around my middle section. I could hardly sit at my desk and Advil helped, but I had to take more after every 3 hours. A friend suggested I might be constipated and all I could think was "what?" Why would that be, if I've been eating all this wonderful food? Turns out, that's exactly what it was--I spent most the whole night in the restroom, and even had serious acid reflux, too. But today, I feel much better--the back pain is gone, the band of swelling, too.

What am I doing wrong? I thought eating more veggies and less meat would be the best thing for me, but it's wreaking havoc on my system.

Sometimes if you have not been eating very healthy your body has to adjust to the different foods-yes gas & constipation-sometimes diarrhea but it does get better as you are eating them longer-don't quit or you basically have to start all over again! The extra fiber is clearing out your bowels for one-which is good-who knows what lurks in there! The other is veggies are digested differently than meats & I am sure junk food (chemicals). Keep up the good work & it will get better! You will start to notice an increase in energy & a lighter feeling-not so bloated or heavy (full) feeling. Good luck!!!

Jonni- It might have been too much too quick. Our bodies have lots of bacteria and enzymes that are needed to digest foods and if your gut wasn’t prepared for lots of fresh foods, then you can experience this type of reaction. Are you eating any yogurt or Kefir? Also lots and lots of water can help. But you might have irritated the lining of your intestines and you might want to give yourself a couple days of lower fiber to let it heal before going back to the higher fiber diet.

Jonni, I have to say if you have been constipated, put some sliced cucumbers in water and drink that. I did that a few day ago and have been drinking lots of it. And I have been having to go to the bathroom quite alot. I didn't think anything about it til I was telling my hysband. He said it sounds like it's bene cleaning me out. Sounds awful, but I guess it's a good thing. I went yesterday and got some lemons and ginger and made up another gallon with that and some more cucumbers. It's so good too. So try that and see what it does for you. You are doinf right by eating all those good things but sometimes it does have an adverse reaction on our bodies. Have you quit eating meat altogether? Sometimes out bodies need meat.

Kris

Thanks, Karla--I wouldn't call my diet prior to this horrible, but I didn't eat nearly the vegetables that I'm eating now. Salads, a steamed veggie or two with dinner, but not daily intakes of 2-3 fruits or veggies. I also splurge now and again on a burger and fries--I'm a big proponent of not denying myself because then I want to eat ALL the bad stuff! This has been working on me for a few weeks, I think, because I attributed it to beef a few weeks back--we'd been having burgers it seemed like, each week since the 4th of July at some relatives house and that's when I started to feel sluggish and swollen.

Alee, I think I'm going to up the yogurt intake and try to start drinking more water. I'm just SO not good at it. I really don't love water, but perhaps if I do what Kris mentioned and keep a nice cold pitcher in the fridge with some flavor, I might start. I don't drink sodas, usually herbal tea or water for lunch. Sometimes, though, I'm a bit lax on my liquid intake.

Kris--I haven't stopped eating meat, just cut back on red meat. I do love chicken and we eat fish, but largely, since Jus works at night and I'm only cooking 2 nights for him during the week, I'm mostly eating meatless meals. I will try that cucumber water--it sounds very refreshing, and maybe, just maybe, it will keep me cleaned out!

Thanks, girls. Yesterday is a day I do NOT want to repeat, so I think I'm going to just keep on, keeping on with the veggies and other good things and see how I'm feeling.

We have switched to iced tea or water with lemon or lime in it for the whole family. I also take probiotics on a regular basis and it keeps me regular. For some reason I too have problems with uncooked veggies such as salad. I went off the probiotics for a while and I felt tired, full of gas and just overall awful. I started it again and it is getting better. More excercise helped too, it keeps things moving.

Good luck and God bless

Getting plenty of water is oh so important when eating lots of fiber. I eat a high fiber diet and I have to drink 8 to 10 8 ounce glasses of water a day. Water is all I drink too! ONce in a while I'll have a glass of organic decaf herbal tea.

I have to take enzymes or I feel awful and sluggish. I don't eat a lot of raw foods due to parasites and bacteria. No matter if it is organic or not and organic is all I eat too. Be sure to wash all your fruits and veges with white vinegar/water bath for 10 minutes to kill anything that might be on them before you eat them too.

Eat 6 smaller meals a day instead of 3 large meals. That will help your body digest things easier too!
Hope you feel better and keep up the good diet!
