One of my best finds was a pressure canner for $8.00. In its orginal box, with a new seal. I have put that to good use. An antique oil lamp with its chimney for $3.00, love the warmth of an oil lamp burning on cold evenings.Another much loved find, is an All-Clad large saucepan I rescued from someones trash pile, then I got a lid free at a yardsale that fits it perfectly:) And a framed Jane Bledsoe print for .50 cents, thats worth hundreds. But I'm enjoying it on our walls. "Make haste, not waste"

Just purchased the brass/metal looking sprays of wheat that were so popular in the 1970's for $2 -- spray painted them black then distressed them with acrylic metallic paints; copper, bronze, orange and then I added touches of pale green, yellows and a hint of red. Now I am going to display them on my front porch.

I have a question for everyone... How do you keep your thrift store purchases in check? I don't like clutter and I've been working hard to clear out a lot of "stuff" that I don't need/want anymore. But I LOVE going to thrift stores. I don't always buy - but there's so many tempting things and its so hard to walk away when the price is good. I'm glad I bought the things I mentioned above, but I don't need to keep adding things into my house. I'm trying to de-clutter - not add more. This is on my mind because I've been going through stuff in my basement most of the day - I've got two boxes to go to Goodwill and a pile of stuff to give to friends/family. And I still have lots more to go through.
With that said, I just found the book "Water for Elephants" for $0.25 at my favorite thrift store(it was $0.50 but it was the right color tag for half off) - I was going to get it from the library but I couldn't pass it up - its $14.99 at the bookstore! I'm glad I bought it - and I'll pass it along to someone else - so that's not a big deal. But I'd like to hear how you resist temptation...

I keep my purchases in check by being REALLY selective about what I buy. I don't get into the packrat mode, or like to "over decorate". Some people have collections (some seen in MJF magazine) that would make me feel clastraphobic. Ever inch covered with something. I clean out my closets and decorations every year or so. I come from more of a voluntary simplicity mode. When we downsized our home after our 3 kids went off to college, I had to really purge things. It was actually a relief to have so much less. We actually are starting to have empty garage sheleves, I love it! I try to remember that I own my stuff, my stuff doesn't own me. I also have sold things of value on eBay and made money, scored twice!

Thanks, Nancy. I usually think I'm being selective when I'm at the thrift store - but sometimes I get something home and wonder what I was thinking??? I also like a more simply decorated house (I've really pared down on the holiday decorations and gave the excess away)- and most of my house is fine - but for some reason, my basement it a catch-all. It bugs me when I realize I've added to it by buying more stuff that I'm not going to use just because it caught my eye and/or the price was right. I wouldn't say its an ongoing battle - I'm not a hoarder or anything - but its kind of a bad habit... Not to mention a waste of money.

Tea Lady, so here's what I do- what kind of space would you REALLY like your basement to be? What could you do there? Craft space? Or??? Sometimes that can inspire you to not look at it as a catch all. I had a spare bedrrom like that. Then I emptied it, painted it and started over. It's beautiful now, and the junk either got stored or donated...

So far, my Best Antique Find EVAH was an old wire basket designed to hold four 1/2 gallon glass milk bottles. It actually came with 4 old milk bottles too. Why am I so excited about old milk bottles and a basket to carry them in? Because the milk we buy at our natural foods co-op comes from a local PA* dairy that uses the same kind of returnable glass bottles for their milk. (We pay a deposit on the bottle at the store, which we get back when we bring the bottles back.) So now I have the perfect place to store the returnable milk bottles until it's time to go to the co-op and return them, as well as the perfect carrier for bringing home four bottles of milk at the same time.
Plus, those half-gallon bottles are a great size for storing drinks in in the refrigerator - we use the ones that came with the basket to hold iced tea, which we make in an old gallon-size pickle jar. I hate the sun tea jars they sell at stores every summer; the spigots always leak. Plus why spend a bunch of money on a fancy tea jar that's going to leak all over the place when you can just buy a gallon of pickles and get the jar for free? Yes, it takes a little baking soda and elbow grease and patience to get the pickle smell out, but once you've done that, you can use the jar for years. (I think the jar predates my marriage to my husband, actually, and we've been married for 13 years.) We lost the original lid to our pickle jar, so we've been using one of those plastic lids they sell to put on pet food cans so you can store leftovers in the fridge if your dog/cat doesn't get the whole can at once. It's exactly the right size.
Our old milk bottles didn't come with lids, but that's not a problem at all, because the plastic lids that come on the milk fit on our old bottles as well. We just save the lids from the milk and use those. Since the milk lids are colour-coded by what kind of milk they are, when I get lid colours other than the usual ones we get on milk (like if I buy chocolate milk for the boys, or non-fat milk for my friend when he visits) we save those for tea. At this point, I have a small collection of brown lids for regular iced tea, and a couple of green ones for herbal (usually peppermint) tea. I label the bottles too, but it's nice to be able to just look in the fridge and grab the bottle with the appropriate colour cap.
*We live right on the MD/PA border, up near Camp David, so even though we're technically in MD, "local" encompasses a lot of stuff in PA as well. |

I went to the grand opening of a new Value Village, and it was bedlam there, but I found some shirts for my sons that I am sure are brand new, never worn, so I'm going to give them to them for Christmas. They are Aeropostale, American Eagle, L.L. Bean, and Point Zero. I scored these shirts for $9.99 each, and they would be $40 shirts at the mall.
This was a real blessing to me last week, as I've been hit hard by two unexpected big expenses, and wondering how I'm going to stretch the dollars for Christmas this year.
Normally I never go to a grand opening, don't like crowds, but I guess the Lord sent me there that day!

I found two hurricane glass globes for .99 apiece. I put them over a couple of jar candles and voila! Seasonal decorating.
Small pickin's compared to what some of you have found!
Lets see, the tripod, waaay back, sewing machines, fabric, purses, oh my, the list goes on for you all!
I'll be getting some pics up on my blog.

I really scored today! Dropped off a small donation at our daughters thrift store where she works. Found a like-new zip up, cable hoodie sweater $3.00, 2 perfect onion soup bowls with lids- 2 for $1.50 (1/2 off today), and a brand new mezzaluna blade with chopping board from Alaska, $3.50. Will be great for chopping herbs. I had been looking at a french onion soup recipe recently, and though- dang if I only had the bowls! I oiled the chopping board, not a mark on it.
And I made french onion soup today, put the bowls in the oven with the bread and cheese, yummy!

What a beautiful score on the chopping board!
I've found a set of onion soup bowls just like Nancey's a while back. I now have a set of six, with lids.
Never even thought about that find 'til I saw the above post.

I found some small Marshall Fields Christmas mugs for $0.50 each - but they were half off so I got all 6 of them for $1.50. I bought them for my daughter for Christmas. She likes the old Marshall Field stuff (we're from Chicago and haven't quite forgiven Macy's for buying them out). Anyway, I can't wait to give them to her... She's going to love them.

I found this last year, from Plowhearth.com and decided to make my own!
Last summer I found 2 old skates for $3.00 and last week bought some picks from Michael's craft store. It was about $7.00 for those. Here's the first finished one for our front door, and I'll have a 2nd one too, for work maybe-
