Just finished this book in...48 hours while working full time and hanging out with my 2 year old :) It's that good. I read almost my whole lunch hour yesterday, last night in bed, lunch today and it's finished.
Such a trying story, though--I mean, for the characters. I loved Julie, the narrator of the story--17 when the story opens, she is already well versed in hard work and the description of young love is just like that. She marries and life becomes..life. Complicated, challenging, struggle after struggle, highs and lows and back to love again. Set in rural South Carolina I would think, about 1899 or 1900.

I just ordered this from my library, had heard about it before and seems like a good read. Thanks for the heads up :)

I know, Michele--I wish I was closer, too. We'd have ourselves a nice little book club! I'd love to know what you think about it.
Now, I'm reading Little Bee. And it's stellar. It's arresting, in that it's about the oil wars and Nigerian refugees coming to Britain, but focuses on one girl's plight and the way she crosses paths with a British woman and her husband. Really amazingly written. There is even humor amidst the dark, dark sentiment of war and genocide.

I read Gap Creek a while back and enjoyed it very much. The main character's marriage, which I remember being the central theme of the book, seemed honest and real. This was a refreshing read.

Absolutely--so funny, I was thinking about that this morning, Pam--it really was "real"...marriage is work, life is work, babies are work and though set in a different time, a different place, the bones are still the same.
