Lisa, Have you tried ancestry.com? They have some stuff you can access for free and others that you have to subscribe to access. Have Fun with it. My mom did our for 50 years and passed it on to me when she died. So much to go through. She loved it and traveled all over with her best friend.

I am a new geneology searcher lol. Started last week with family on both sides, my mother and my father's side. LOVE finding birth certificates, wedding certificates etc etc. I know a lot about our family because my mother's aunt (she passed away yrs ago) was a real, REAL geneology buff lol. She could talk for hours!! And when I was a little girl I never liked it...BORING!
BUT I do know we are of nobility on both sides of the family And we go way back to the late 1300...that is how far aunt went already. Love finding out more and am still looking. I also have pictures of my great grandparents on father's side, and might get some more hopefully.

I remember as a little girl being dragged from town to town and cemetery after cemetery. My mother researched the whole family before 1983 (pre internet). My parents went overseas on a trip to finish her research. She wrote a book and had many copies made for everyone in the family. Our family dates back to the Norman Conquests. I think geneology is a very fascinating subject, though when I was a kid I, too, thought it was soooo boring. :)

FarmDream, Same story here!! The cemeteries were not so bad, but those old dusty records offices at the courthouses were mind-numbing!! My mother reminded me the other day after the Joplin tornado went through that there were many hours spent going through newspaper clippings and paper documents in the Joplin library many years ago, researching a branch of the family that ventured down that way. All of that is gone now...blown away...hopefully they were able to capture some of that documentation on to computer.

Been at it for over a year now and am still digging. So much info out there. I'm on anstery so if you need any help just e-mail me and I will see what I can do. If anyone need any info in the northeast Texas area I'm here for you. Don't mind going out to take pictures at cemeteries or looking through records if need be. Just let me know. Have a great day! I found most of my information on the Church of the Latter Day Saints website. But I lucked out and found an ancestor (see the post The Ingalls Connection)that had an already recorded history published which through other lines lead to royalty. Those lines have been kept for hundreds of years. That was on my Mother's side, no such luck on my Dad's.....still hitting a wall there at my great grandfather. Good luck, it can be both fun and extremely frustrating!!

i think that we should have a farmgirl section for genealogy! i have been researching my birth family for almost 11 years now and i absolutely am hooked- and the side offshoots!! (laterals is the word i guess!!) i love getting email from "cousins" and exchanging photos etc.
a few years ago; i intro'd my mother to a whole slew of realtives she never knew about- of course, they were all dead so we visited at the cemeteries-- we do an annual memorial day weekend thing- 13 Michigan cemeteries last count!!!!
have any of you used findagrave.com? that is a great place and i love to help by takiong pics for that....no cost -

Margo...thanks for the website. I'm going to check it out. I like the idea of a genealogy section here.

I got into genealogy twenty nine years ago when I married. It was the only thing that I could talk to my mother in law about. She printed a book of her findings, and I have been continuing, and have a tree at Ancestry. His line originally came from Holland in the 1600s, and the name today is nothing like the original.
I enjoy the research. It keeps my "little gray cells" active, and it is amazing how much more interesting history is when you can connect it to real people. Even the internet sources can be wrong, though. There is always the possibility that someone will have a piece of new information.
I think that it would be great to have a section here, to share tips and little known facts. |

I have been doing genealogy for more years than some of you are old. I love it. I also have had a brick wall for many years. Just keep working around it. I am extemely fortunate that my side and my husband's side of the family kept pictures back to tin types. I use Ancestry.com and Rootsweb.com Rootsweb is free. So is familysearch.org. I have met some amazing distant 'cousins' through the years. I would love an genealogy site on MJF.

Knowing how hard my mother worked to find information and photos about our family ancestors, it pains me to go to antique shops and find boxes full of old photos. Baby pictures, wedding pictures...all there lost to those who might be interested in knowing what their family members looked like as babies or young adults. I imagine they ended up there as a result of an estate sale, but something just doesn't seem right about it.

Paula- I agree! I have a box full of old black and white photos. I take them out and look at them and think "why didn't anyone write your name on the back." I'm keeping the photos and hopefully will instill in DD the desire to keep them, too.

I love geneology also. If we are hitting brick walls think how hard it was for older generations who have gathered info without the ease of the internet and recorded it to pass on to us. That encourages me to plow ahead. One thing that happened in my hubbys search. Mo took corner sections of 3 different counties and created a new county. The people didnt move but when I researched them their location did as it was listed under the new counties name. You find facts and history lessons you were not even after. |

I'm an amateur in the world of genealogy - but enjoy it when I have the time. I've been on Ancestry.com - through the local library - but get stuck too. My biggest hurdle is finding things in the UK and other countries. Any suggestions for overseas?
