Hi! I am new here and thought I might introduce myself. I live on 6 acres in the high desert of Central Oregon. I am married, and the mom of 2 boys. I have a part time job off the farm, and also keep a small herd of goats, both milkers and meat. We have chickens for eggs, horses to ride, cats and dogs for company and friendship! I enjoy keeping a large garden, and canning and freezing the produce to use year round. While I do have a few fruit trees, my folks keep a large orchard, so there is plenty of fruit to preserve around here too. Last year I put in 4 different types of berries too, but they are still getting established, so we haven't done a whole lot with them yet other than eat a few berries here and there. Gardening can be a challenge here, as it is very volcanic and arid and can freeze any month of the year. I grow most of my more tender plants in hoop houses so that I can cover them quickly and easily in case of frost. My hobbies include crochet and horseback riding both from home and in the nearby Ochoco mountains. I have ridden since I was a small girl, and sometimes also take in foster horses for the rescue I got my own two horses from. I have recently started making my own cheese from my goats milk, and have sort of made a hobby of having a small grocery bill. :-) I hope to make friends here, and to exchange ideas for all of the above plus more.

I keep two kinds. I have Boers for meat and Saanens for milk. My herd is small. Right now I have 7 Boers and 3 Saanens. One of the Saanens was supposed to be bred for August kids, but when the test came back, she had failed to settle. I will be taking her back to the breeders soon to try again. She is milking through from the last lactation though and is still supplying about a gallon a day of milk. Her half-sister is my other main dairy goat. I just bought her a few months ago. I knew she was not bred at that time, but she also is milking through and is currently on month 15 of her lactation. She is still giving about a half gallon a day. I am hoping to breed her about 3 months after her sister is bred, so that they are milking opposite each other and I am never out of milk. I milk a couple of my Boer girls too. They don't give nearly as much, but I have a couple who have proven to be worth the time it takes to put them on the stand production wise anyway. One of them is good for a little better than a quart--so not too bad. She is also raising triplets, so I think she is doing pretty good. I love the goats. They are just miracles of providence really, if you use them to their full potential. They are also so funny, and friendly, and just nice to be around. I hope to have my own breeding buck in the next year or two. I don't have him yet, as I am still kind of assembling my doe herd and I want to make sure he is unrelated to any of them before I buy him. I would like to have a couple more nice Boer does before I choose my buck.

A big welcome Kristi~~ where did you move from? We lived in Central Or. for about 10 years, but we were about 75-100 miles south of you, between Gilchrist and Chemult, 3 miles off the road, loved it there, gardening was a challenge but you've got a better shot there, then we did!! You will love it here!!

Your place and lifestyle sound just wonderful. I loved reading about what all you do with your goats. Welcome from a farmgirl in SW Wyoming!
