Hello all! I'm "new" here, well I signed up a few months ago but haven't had time to "play" yet. My mom actually referred me to this site-Sylvia E. Not sure what to include in my intro-I am a stay-at-home/homeschooling mom and military wife. I have 2 little girls and a baby on the way (only my oldest is school age). We currently live in GA thanks to the Army, we would kind of like to stay just because we are tired of moving although we are a long way from family. We try to live naturally, I use cloth diapers, hang them to dry, eat whole foods as much as we can but we still have a long way to go, make kombucha, use soapnuts for laundry, use vinegar and baking soda to clean pretty much everything....I'm always trying to learn more. Its hard to establish new habits while chasing a toddler but I'm working on it :).
Oh I'm also a Labor Doula, I'm still "in training" but I've finished most of it including my births all I need to do is write two papers and get my packet sent off for certification. I won't be able to take any more clients until after the baby is born and old enough to be left for several hours though.
Its nice to "meet" you all I look forward to getting to know you and learning a lot!

Welcome from Northeast PA! Savannah is one place on my list that I've always wanted to visit - ever since I read the books by Eugenia Price. Maybe I'll get there one day!
Hope you enjoy the forum and us "farmgirls" as much as I do.

Sounds like you have found the right forum for you! Welcome! I love Doulas! I'm a maternal child nurse and was always so happy when a mom had a doula. I'm not practicing now, just being a farmer in the second half of my life. Looking forward to visiting on the forum. Glad you are here! Connie

Thanks everyone.
HI MOM!
I didn't mention, I'm not living "on a farm" right now :). I live in a teeny house (although 200 sq feet bigger as of the last couple weeks!) on a small but bigger than most lot in a planned subdivision. Not crazy about the HOA stuff but with a husband that deploys a lot and small children I suppose its the best for now as I'm not sure how I would manage land on my own! We had a small garden this year that completely flopped (other than the jalapenos), my fig tree had 9 figs but most of them fell off before they ripened and my citrus trees aren't producing yet (do I need more than one of each type to cross pollinate?)We planted strawberries and they died, blueberry bushes that disappeared and raspberries, about half the raspberry bushes (3) are growing but of course no fruit this year. Trying to do what we can with what we have :). I hope to find a place for an herb garden soon or grow some indoors (actually I will probably start all of them indoors and move some to a raised bed next spring). We have seriously toyed with the idea of building a chicken tractor in the backyard and attempting to get away with a couple chickens. |

Hi there from a fellow military wife! How wonderful to be in Savannah, albeit the heat! There is so much to learn here, I just know you are going to love it!

Are you close to the beach? If so do you visit? I love the ocean. I try and go once a year. My AC is working over time too. Welcome to the farm and read about me at debra e.

I'm from West Texas so I'm used to heat but NOT humidity....makes it seem so much worse! However my dalmation is loving it because we have let her be inside more lately.
We are about a 45 minute drive to several different beaches so yes pretty close. I don't like the beach during the summer, I don't like swimming and my kids in the water make me nervous (I know I'm weird) but I do like to go during the off season to collect shells/sand dollars. I always say I'm going to use them for crafts but never do. This year I painted some sand dollars for Christmas ornaments. I like to go when the temperature is comfortable (even if I have to wear pants and a jacket) and there aren't many other people, that way the kids can just run and play and I can look for treasure :).
I'm due in October, I'm almost 27 weeks at this point. Both my girls were born in September so I'm used to being pregnant when its hot!

Kombucha is fermented tea (that is the simple explanation). Its a healthy probiotic drink, I bet there are some discussions here about it if you do a search :). I've been making it for over a year and while I'm not currently drinking it (long explanation as to why and I will again at some point) it did wonders for me when I did drink it. It increased my metabolism and helped with my fibro. Its a good way to get probiotics and its easy and cheap to make yourself. You do have to have a culture to get started. Maybe when I get a few other things a little more organized and less chaotic around my house I'll put some of my extra cultures on the swap, I usually have way too many!!

Welcome, I lived in the Savannah area for almost 11 years, we first lived on Wilmington Island, we only lived there for 1 year then we moved to the country. We are not really beach people, we could always find sand dollars on the beach during the winter, our favorite time to visit. We then moved about 35 miles north of Savannah. When we moved to Alabama we left a lot of good friends there, we do get back every now and then to visit. Loved it there. Our son in law is from there. Our oldest granddaughter's name is Savannah, bet you can't guess why? Again welcome, you will love it here everyone is so friendly.
