Hello!
We are leaving for a 4 day camping/hiking trip tomorrow to the fabulous Marin forests :).
I am rethinking my whole "camping prep". After reading the Outpost, and Lifebook, I am thinking our past camp days of canned soups and prepped foods are over :).
But, it is hot here. I usually take two coolers, one for everyday items, and one for storage. I would freeze plastic water bottles and put them in the storage cooler to keep things cold. This works perfectly, except that I never buy pastic water bottles unless we are camping. We bring them home to recycle, but there must be a different way.
Any suggestions?
Thanks. Heike

I save plastic milk jugs and wash them thoroughly - fill them with water, ice tea, lemonade, etc. - so, then cold drinks as they thaw out.

I freeze everything that can be frozen to keep the cooler cold longer. Another idea is to use the bag inside a box of wine. Get it out of the box, wash, fill it with room to expand and freeze. It collapses and is very light weight. I use one when back packing to haul water from the spring for cooking. I also do a lot of pre cooking at home. If I'm making anything with browned meat it gets done at home and frozen. If there is elec available a crock pot is awesome to use. I prep all chopped veggies at home. Potatoes get pre washed at home. I do as much as I can at home where things are more convenient! We have a favorite breakfast I'll share with you. Campfire French Toast-A loaf of unsliced sourdough bread, torn into chunks that will fit on a roasting stick. Mix up your french toast egg mixture in a tall drinking glass. Put the bread on a stick, dunk and cook like a marshmallow over the fire. A shallow dish with syrup and another with melted butter to dunk after cooking and almost no clean up! Another thing we like is campfire pigs in a blanket. Make them at home and bake. At the campsite just put one on a stick and roast over the fire till warm through. This works better with a yeast bread than biscuit dough recipe. Biscuit tends to fall apart. You can buy these at the grocery already made in the freezer section if you don't mind that. This is perfect for folks that get up before the cook and want to eat. Have a good time! Connie

Great ideas! We also freeze gallon jugs of distilled water from home, and juice for breakfasts. We use reusable water bottles (like Rubbermaid) for our drinks. Like Connie, we also freeze everything we possibly can before going. We've also found a seperate cooler just for drinks and a few healthy snacks is a good idea, since that will get opened much more often than the main food one, helping keep the food one much cooler! I also love the idea of sharing camping tips/recipes!
