I don't always get to do the projects that I see in the Magazine (so many ideas, so little time!) but I did get a chance to make some of the dish drainer quilts that were in the June/July 2011 issue (page 74). I changed the pattern a bit. Here is what I did...
I had some micro-fiber towels that my daughter doesn't like the feel of so she won't use them. I figured I could put them to better use as dish drainer quilt backs. I didn't bother with batting because they are absorbent enough with just the towel on the back. So, I cut a piece of pretty fabric from my stash and quilted it with the towel. Then I added lace around the outside edge, just top-stitching it all the way around with a bit of a gather at the corners to avoid curling. I love them, and they are so pretty!

Nice idea! I did one with the ruffle that is shown in the magazine but only did one that way. It's cute but my patience is limited. LOL
OK, I'm ready-Let's go. |

Sweet! I like the idea of using micro-fiber towels. I have some that I don't like either, so they are now going to be doomed for a better life on my counter.
Cheers! ~ Marilyn

The dish drainer quilts inspired me in a diferent direction. My flatware is kept on the counter in an old dishwasher cubby. I knit a small garter stitch rectangle in leftover cotton yarn to place under it. |

Carrie, darling dish drainer quilts and way cool idea using the microfiber cloths. Going to have to try that. But I'm not a lacy, frilly sort of person, so will have to come up with some other ideas to finish one off. Super great idea and can't wait to make some using the cloths. |

I cut out 6 and finished two so far. My deviation is to alter the sizes to fit scrap pieces of low loft synthetic batting. I'll use the smaller one on the counter in our travel trailer. I'm thinking about pairing one with a matching apron to use for Christmas gifts.

Carolyn, I find that batting can be sewn together to make larger pieces to fit my needs. I just lay them next to each other and stitch into one and then the other from the bottom to the top. That way, when you draw the thread tight they just butt up to one another and make no noticable seam. Just don't pull the thread too tight and make it bunch up.
Have fun making your quilts!!

Carrie, Those are adorable! I really like the idea of using the towel instead of the batting. Of course, I haven't made any yet so I don't know which is quicker to dry, the towel or the ones with the batting. But I think you have done a great job of coming up with a way to use what you have already on hand. ~Denise

Denise-
I find that the micro-towels dry fairly quickly so that has not been a problem for me. They are super absorbent, too, so they really do their job well!

Carrie, Definitely going to give these a try. I have been thinking about making them since the first time I saw them in the magazine. I am going to be away this week but when I come back I am going to head up to the sewing room for sure! Thanks for the idea of the towels too!

Can anyone send me the pattern for the dish drainer quilt? Of all the MJF magazines I have that is the ONLY one I can't find! I Wanted to sew one up today and so far I've spent most of the morning trying to figure out where my magazine is with the instructions in it! Agh!!! Help!!
