Ok I'm new to sewing. I don't count my two home economics classes 25 years ago in middle school! lol haha
I have only made two things completely by myself. I have taken a class and made a shirt in class, and I've had help from a friend to make a couple of other things.
Any way I am almost done making this skirt on my own. As soon as I get to Joann's or Hancock's today and buy this thing-a-ma-jig to help me pull the elastic through the waist I will be done! lol (Yes I know I can use a safety pin, 1 I don't have any of my own, went upstairs and borrowed one from my sister. 2. It broke while I was doing it. I still managed to get the elastic all the way through though. 3. I thought I had sewn the elastic down, then I sewed the hole up, only to discover the elastic had not been sewn down! lol And I had to figure out how to get the elastic out of it again, since now the ends were in the middle of the waist band and no longer any where near the opening! lol hahaha Finally got it all pulled out. And decided I had to go get the little tool! hahaha Cause I wasn't going through that again with another safety pin that would probably break, and take forever to do! When the with the tool it will only take minutes, instead of near a hour! hahaha And I'll be done! Plus I plan on making this skirt many more times as I love the pattern, really like the design, the fit and the length! So the tool will be worth the investment. lol
All that being said....I have been looking at this book called Sew Serendipity forever! I even had it on my wish list this year from Amazon. (I buy about 100 dollars worth of books each year) But, must of taken it out of the cart and bought something else with my budgeted money for the year on books. Another one of my friends posted on face book a serendipity dress pattern she just bought from Etsy. And it inspired me to make a change in a "dress" pattern I have. I have already used this pattern once to make a slip with. (it's really a nursing slip pattern, but depending on fabric and view used you can make it into a summer type dress). I had been planning making a summer dress with the same pattern, as the pattern is soooooo simple. But, I didn't want to look like I was wearing a sack/bag! Where Serendipity puts belts on her dresses/tunics would be perfect in my opinion for this slip dress I am planning on making. However, I kind of want the instructions from her on just doing that part, which from my Amazon look into this book, look, looks like she is including the instructions for such in her book (wouldn't have to buy a pattern of hers, just the book, which also does come with patterns).
Any way finally to the question at hand. Do any of you own this book, would you recommend it to a beginner, is it something you like and use, or at least think a beginner would?

I don't have the book, but you've peaked my interest. Normally I do not sew with patterns. I "free-hand" everything I make. My mama scolds me, cuz she says when people ask me to whip something up for them, I might mis-guess their size, and possibly offend them. Hadn't happened yet, but it a really valid point.
Good for you Heather, for picking up sewing. It's one of my two favorite rainy day passtimes! When you finish, and can wear what you've made, it feels good. I'm going to go look up that book now. Good job on the skirt. When you finish up, you should post a picture! (((Hugs)))

yeah I think the book is kind of for people to be more freehanded as well, but comes with basic patterns for you to manipulate to your own style and size.

Really though I mean even if you did miscalculate some ones size so do store bought patterns! they rarely are spot on with their measurements I have noticed! haha

You've inspired me Heather to pick up sewing with a machine at age 66. I can hand sew..embroider, crochet etc, but for goodness sakes, I need to step out like you. Thank you!
