Does your state preform a random check on car insurance? Ours does. One more reason to go back to horse and buggy.
They mail out a letter stating that you must copy and send them back, 1 of 3 things they list. This is such an invasion on private information. If you don't sent it back, they fine you. One more reason to make money off of us. Pretty sad world we live in. So much control, yet it's so out of control.

I have never heard of this but having been the victim of a hit and run where it was doubtful the perpetrator had insurance- I am glad there are laws in place to require insurance. Sending random verification letters seems a bit much though. I wonder if uninsured driving is on the rise on Ohio?

I had something similar happen. DMV sent me a letter informing me that there was no insurance on my DOdge pickup. I called the insurance agent and he said to ignore it. I did and got another letter telling me that I either had to provide proof of insurance or go the unisured route and pay a whole bunch of money or get my license revoked.
I spent a lot of time on the phone arguing with them and offering to send them copies of the last six years of my insurance statements. She still claimed that I had no insurance and was going to lose my license. After several repeat phone calls, the insurance agent finally called her and discovered that ONE measly character in the VIN had been read wrong and yes, indeedy, I did have insurance on my pickup.
What a pain in the rear. I swear, you can't tell the government anything. Even when you have physical proof.

i have had this randomly pop up when in WA and HI but only when it came time to re-register the car. What a pain in the butt but with so many folks driving with no insurance at all.... I can kind of understand the reason behind it, just maybe not how they are doing it. I was hit by a person with no insurance a few years back. Unless I wanted to go to court it was left upon me to pay for the repairs through my own insurance, even though the police wrote up that it was not my fault. Was a bit disheartening after so many years of paying for insurance and having a clean record.
You would have thought the person on the phone would have verified the vin with you... duh of them!

I have never heard of this before. Here in PA you can't have a car with tags unless you file the insurance information with it. Of course that doesn't stop you from dropping the insurance. I don't know if the ins. co. notifies the state about it though which could be a problem if you get your money back from the insurance co. without record of new ins. or the vehicle having been junked.

I know it's a nuisance, but I'm all for insurance checks. However, doing it by mail seems a bit ridiculous!
Our business is located on a hill with a curve, and when people lose control they always wind up slamming into our gate or shop building. This usually happens more than once every year and 99% of the time the drivers are uninsured. Even though we have insurance on our property, our rates go up every year because of the volume of claims we have to make. I have yet to see one of these uninsured motorists take full responsibility for their actions or pay the penalty they are charged with. And every time we have to dicker with the insurance company to pay us enough to hire someone to do the repairs - because they will not pay us to have our own employees do the work. They always want to low-ball their estimates- especially if the driver was uninsured.
Here in WA insurance is required by law, but I have never heard of having to show proof of insurance unless you are renewing tabs, get pulled over or are involved in an accident. The only other time I am aware of is when a person takes their driving test to get a drivers license they have to prove that the vehicle they are testing with is covered by insurance.
Two of my cousins are police officers and they say around half of the traffic stops they make involve underinsured motorists. It's sad that so many people don't to follow the rules because it makes the cost of following the rules so much higher for the rest of us.

Marilyn, i so agree! Just this memorial day weekend we had a drunk (well, we assume) driver plow through our front yard, taking out our flagpole, numerous huge boulders set in deep, and hitting two cars (daughters friends sleeping over to avoid the drunks on the road... go figure) Before anyone could get outside the car took off. Of course we figure they didn't have insurance either. No serious harm done but a pain in the butt and a sad example of just another non-responsible person today.

In New Jersey all the officer has to do is run your plate.
If you are found without insurance, you lose your license for 12 months!!! Then your rates are almost double plus the DMV fees you will be paying for a number of years.

i have no problem with showing that i am insured and really agree that everyone should be--i just had never heard of this random check.
any state i've registered a vehicle in asks for proof-
