Did the dentist put you on antibiotics? I used to work for a dentist and his standard for treatment was to have the patient start antibiotics right aways even if there wasn't infection present as there is a strong chance one will develop. He also prescribed Vicodan for pain. I would advise using an ice pack and call the dentist if it gets worse.

Thanks for the advice. I did use an ice pack for a bit but then when I took it off, it hurt more! It is actually doing much better today though I still cannot chew on it! I think it is hurting more since this is a "re-do" of a tooth I had capped years ago, plus it has only a temporary filling to hold me over until he finishes next Wednesday.
It is a HUGE reminder I must take care of my teeth better---as well as be diligent to take my kids twice a year!
Hopefully, he can "save" my one other problem tooth. Glad that are not "front" teeth!

Howdy! I'm new to the site but I thought I would chime in since I had a recent root canal experience myself. It was also during the temp phase and I was taking Advil every 4 hours. I was so concerned something was wrong that I went back to the dentist the following Monday (I'll never do it before a weekend again) and he told me what happens is that it fills up with gas and builds pressure. He lifted the temp, let it air out, and put it back on. No more pain. I had to do this one more time before the permanent went on but at least I knew what it was so I didn't panic. Plus I did not chew on that side until the permanent was on. I would call my dentist and let him know right away because you should not have to suffer like that. I hope you feel better soon!!

clove oil, peppermint oil is good for toothaches; not sure how well it'd work for rootcanal issues

Clove oil or Echinacea tincture work as temporary relief for toothaches ... not sure about root canal relief, though!

The medical term and correct name for Clove oil is Eugenol. If you want to buy it at a phamracy that is the name it is sold by. In the dental office I worked in we did alot of root canals and never saw a temporary crown fill with gas. If the root canal is done and filled correctly there is no room for gas to be so the canals must not have been filled yet. I've had four of the darn things myself and never a problem or much pain but have always done antibiotics immediatly and had good pain meds if I needed them. Do everything to save your teeth, when they are gone you will start to lose jaw bone and it will be one problem after another.

Donna, I am a dental assistant and what our dentist tells patients is to rinse with warm salt water. You can do the ibuprofen then 2-3 hours later take tylenol. There has been trama to that tooth and it will take a couple days to feel better.

If he drilled through your crown.. you need to remember there is no enamal left on your original tooth so that will make it more sensitive. If the pain is still there on Monday I would call the dentist. He is not going to want to continue working on it with you in pain.

Good Luck

Again...thanks for the advice! it feel so much better today! i think there was just so much trauma to the tooth and area...he had to remove a 14 year old crown--in pieces!
i will however make a note about the herbs because I have 2 more toothy things to take care of this summer and then I hope to be done. I am SHOCKED that a root canal is over $800 PLUS another $800+ for a permanent crown 0_o...not to mention a cleaning and 2 fillings to the tuner of another $300...and possibly even an extraction at $400. Sigh....

Here's a phrase my brother remembers reading in a dentist office as kids..."Be true to your teeth or they'll be false to you!" So true indeed!

Donna, Glad to hear that it is feeling better, you are right about the trauma to your mouth. Compared to the dental prices here you got a good deal, my last gold crown was over $1000. I hate paying it but I will do anything for my teeth to keep them.

If you want to relieve tooth pain with an herbal treatment(probably not the best idea post-root canal), a ginger tea mouth wash will relieve help relieve tooth pain
