Anyone like me and realizing that we are more than half over with this year and for some of us- our garden harvest may be in danger from first frost if it doesn't get a move on? This year has been so crazy! I can't believe I am still looking at a baby garden when it should have been growing for a month and a half or more by now!!

I wasn't thinking of it in those terms, Alee, but today I was looking out at my garden - feeling like this all has to be a dream - and thinking how before we know it, we'll be sharing the last of the harvest with neighbors, taking down the remaining plants and prepping for winter... It will feel so sad, but only for a brief moment. As we turn from summer, we look forward to fall: time to make apple pie, can applesauce, visit the pumpkin patch and start baking again! Bulky sweater weather! My favorite time of year! Every season has its own joys and delights to warm our hearts and make us smile! :)
It truly is mind-boggling how fast things go, though, isn't it? I don't want to rush this summer at all. I want to enjoy every day and just soak in all the green while I can. ;) For us, it's just been "perfect" - not too hot, a little rainy (but not so bad for Pittsburgh, I don't think)... I'm not bragging, believe me - this is very unusual for us, and I'm thoroughly enjoying it, that's all. By now, it's usually very hot and humid and I'm just starting to combat early stages of powdery mildew. It's been so nice that that just hasn't happened yet. Every morning I go out to inspect my garden and have felt just so blessed and amazed at how healthy everything looks. Aside from the rabbits, which are deal-with-able, it's all very good. I'm so thankful for this season's weather. It probably won't last long, but I sure am enjoying it while it's here!
I just can't believe, though, how hard some of you all have been hit with the weather this year! I know you're looking at a baby garden and are feeling underwhelmed - that's usually what I'm doing this time of year, myself. Don't worry - your garden will begin to flourish before you know it! And, God willing, you'll have an unusually extended warm season into the fall - I'll say a few prayers for you! :) Our weather was just unusually warm and rainy in April, so I planted early for the first time - I am in shock at how big my plants are for this time of year! I've actually got baby pumpkins already - that's unheard of for me!!! I'm usually very lucky if the pumpkin plants even survive the powdery mildew - the hope of seeing pumpkins themselves is usually no more than a fantasy for me! But I keep trying... I'm hopeful that I may actually get a really nice fall planting in before the cold and snow arrive this year... Then again, maybe we'll be the ones with really early, really cold, inclement weather; you all got hit at the beginning of planting season, we'll probably get hit at the tail end! Oh well, guess we just have to roll with it and take things as they come. In the meantime, it sure does give us something to talk about in the line at the grocery store, huh? ;)
I'm so sorry you're in this weird gardening predicament - I know it must be so frustrating. Just hang tight - good things will come! They will!!! :)

Alee, mine is so slow. It should have been twice as big by now. But I am getting tomatoes and green beans. Yep, this year is half over already. Goodness, where does the time go? I am already thinking about firewood.

I don't even have mine planted yet. I am counting on a hot October.
Heck, hubs & I wnet to NYC mid Nov & it was 70 there.
So who knows....
Oh & Kris, hubs is ALWAYS thinking of firewood. His obsession |

Oh Alee....Bite your tongue! It's been pretty miserable here raining today, but we need it. Not very much warmth. I have a feeling this is what our summer is going to be cool and rainy...
Everything is up beans, corn, squash, pumpkins, spinach and my herbs are thriving. I did have to re-plant red potatoes because I got them in too early and we had a very wet streak a few weeks ago,they just never sprouted-Had to search two counties to find red seed potatoes and ended up getting some in before this rain came in... but we need some HEAT and NOW.
Summer solstice today?---You sure wouldn't guess that looking out my window-

I remember back in the 60's when I planted my garden (on time) and the tomatoes never turned red! I called it "the year of the green tomato." It was overcast, rained a lot, and never warmed up. I was living in Portland, OR at the time.

LOL! Oh my gosh, Betty! I think I remember that season - although it was back in Massachusetts, and I was very, very young... That was "the year of pickalilly" for my family - my Mom and Grandma made so much they couldn't give it away... I'll never eat the stuff again! LOL!

We have a week of sunny hot weather here before the next rain storm. It was nice to see some of the local rivers dropping below flood level. I am just stunned that it is the Solstice and my garden is still so puny. I haven't gotten to harvest anything yet!

Our garden is doing ok - but just ok... We've had lots and lots of rain - the ground is so wet and soggy, we've lost some green peppers, beans, and cukes... In between the rain, we've had very hot, humid weather... We have a couple raised beds and those are doing much better. We've been talking about doing all raised beds - this year has made the decision for us.
