This is the first year that I have done square foot gardening. I read the book and followed it to the T. There is some expense up front building the beds and making the soil, but it sure pays off in the end. Everything is doing great and hardly any weeding at all! I fit almost as many plants in these 6 beds as I did in 3 large in ground beds! I have already harvested all the early crops and will do a fall re-planting. The feed buckets in the corners have potatoes growing in them. I am really excited with the results!

I ask not for a larger garden, but for finer seeds.

I get up every morning determined to both change the world and have one hell of a good time. Sometimes this makes planning my day difficult.

Diane, what a wonderful garden! We started using square foot gardening a couple years ago....isn't it easier to keep up with the weeds? Since everything is so compact I just don't have as many weeds and what does come up is manageable. I like what you did with the potatoes. I wonder if that would work for asparagus?

It probably would not work for asparagus, since it is a perennial.

What are you using as mulch? I can't tell from the photo. Your garden is so lovely, I love how neatly laid out it is. It very much appeals to the Virgo in me. Nicely done!

Your garden is so neat and tidy...I love it!! We did raised beds this year. I love being able to reach everything and keep the edges neat.

The mulch is cypress, the reason is it was on sale! Actually I wasn't planning on mulch but the square foot beds were built on top of my in ground garden and I decided to put down weed barrier cloth and mulch. The fence is to keep the dogs out who in turn keep the critters out.

Lovely Diane! We started with square foot gardening too. We love it. The soil was a bugger to make for all the beds but was well worth it. We are going on year four and the beds are still soft and fertile. We add compost each spring and just keep planting. The only problem we are having is that we don't have enough room to rotate crops effectively. We want enough of everything to eat from the garden and put up for the winter. We need more space so we are moving the veggies to the front field next spring and plan to do the lasagna method out there. I will use the square foot soil on them too. It is the best!

Great garden - we're planning raised beds too. Now we have lots of weeding to keep up and very soggy soil... I'm going to check out the book at the library.

Love square foot gardening, but you have to follow it closely. Your garden looks great

I started with square foot gardening in a way, I couldn't afford to get the wood for raised beds so I used the square foot method to do "rows". It's a little confusing but once people actually come see what I did then it makes sense. I can't believe the amount of stuff I could fit in my garden this year doing it the square foot way! It's triple or even quadruple the amount of product for less than half the work! I can't believe what a big difference a few hour drive makes, my garden hasn't grown half as much as yours has already! I'm praying for warmer weather! :) Thanks for sharing the pictures, your garden is absolutely gorgeous!

Peggy, are you a quilter? or cross stitcher or sewer? I have a ton of quilt books and patterns and other craft stuff from a whole shop I have in storage that I'd be happy to trade out.
