| Hello all, I'm Renda, 46 never married, no kids. I've been living in the city all my life and know nothing about country living plus I am disable (limited income) and probably never will be able to live the life I desire to live off the land. I am looking for someone to fellowship with on homesteading in Alabama. I am alone and sometimes its get overwhelming. Are there any Alabama ladies out there who can teach me things like sewing, cooking food from scratch or just to talk too? Thanks. |

Where abouts is Marenda?
Do y'all grow cotton there?
My mom and I went through Alabama last fall and couldn't believe all the cotton fields. The first time we saw them harvesting!

Hi Renda, Welcome from Missouri. I'm fairly new here too, but I really enjoy reading about and connecting with girls from all over the country, and even other parts of the world. Like the virtual porch sitters...it is like we are all sitting around one great big table enjoying a very tasty cup of tea with each other at all times. Some girls get up and go do some chores for awhile and come back later, but someone is always there to talk to. Have fun!!

Hi Renda, welcome from Wisconsin. Between all the wonderful and knowledgeable farmgirls on here and the MaryJane books and magazines, you'll quickly learn a lot about country living. If you have specific questions, just post a question and you'll get lots of answers! If you don't have the books and money is a problem, check your library, that's where I first came across MaryJane's books. Later I just had to own them.

| Thank you all for the warm welcome. Debra I'm in B'ham (city girl) and no I have never grown cotton but my dearly departed mom was raised on a small cotton farm where they had a garden and made their own clothes etc but she never taught me those skills, she tried but I was young and lazy (Ok wasn't interested back then, lol). I just recently purchased my first sewing machine because I would like to start making my own modest dresses and skirts but have no clue how to sew. Because I am a big woman and prefer lose dresses and long shirts and blouses that cover one's behind. I am looking for old patterns like ancient clothings I especially like middle east type patterns but they are hard to find and expensive. Maybe I should with something simple like a robe or tunic? What do you ladies suggest? Thanks. Renda |

Hey, a caftan pattern would be easy and comfy too. Give that a try. I've always dressed modest and like my clothes loose and long, so I know what you are saying. Some girls should stay home, the way they dress now-a-days! I'd be ashamed to be seen with everything hanging out. Then they wonder why they get abused. Really? Are you kidding?......OK ... I'm off my soap-box now! *giggle*

Welcome Renda, I live north of Mobile. I agree with the other ladies, you are gonna love it here. All you have to do is ask and you will get answers. I am still learning alot, but anything I can help with just ask. I sew mostly childrens custom clothing for a small childrens boutique and my 4 granddaughters. So, I can help with sewing questions.

HerbLady55, I so agree with you on how young girls are dressing today and then seemed shocked when bad things happen to them. I can't believe the way teen girls even dress around their fathers and brothers, no respect or shame.
