I know a newly married couple. The husband is from the country and the wife is from the city. What types of things would you tell each of them to make the transition easier? What skills does the wife need to know in the country and what skills does the husband need to know to visit the city?

Learn how to set and empty a mouse trap to the wife. Make sure you leave your boots at the door to the husband.

well that would depend, do they plan on settling in the country or city? I married a city mouse and over the twenty year course he is slowly becoming more country. (but it's taken enough time, lol!)

For the wife - be prepared to dust a lot if you live on a gravel road. For the husband - pick-up trucks don't fit in most of the covered parking garages downtown.

Practically speaking, the Mrs. in the country will need to know how to shop for a week at a time. The biggest difference I've observed between city and country is that you need to make lists. Running out to the store for 15 minutes because you forgot to buy eggs or coffee creamer is right out.
She will also need to know how to cook some, and plan for emergency situations buy either buying frozen dinners or making ahead and freezing dinners because there is no way to phone up pizza or chinese for a last minute supper. It helps you miss amenities less if you know how to make your favorite coffee drink at home.
Mister in the city needs to know how to dress to the proper occasion, know how to park his truck anyplace, and to not live every day like he's on vacation by eating out, going out, etc. Also, don't be hard on your poor wife if there's no coffee in the house, just be a dear and pop out to the store for 15 minutes to get some. :)

It takes a lot more gas money to live in the country, nothing is close. You can learn to use public transportation in the city. Everything is close. |

wife: that noise you keep hearing at the break of dawn is a rooster & no you can't shut it off like an alarm clock....Fancy clothes/shoes will now be put to the back of the closet & the jeans will be worn more than you ever believed...hairspray & country don't mix unless you are at church.....forget painted toenails...no one but you will ever see them...fingernails make good screwdrivers....if you make friends, you will get company whether you expected it or not.....formal invites don't work in the country well.
husband: that in the field/out in the animal pen smell may be alright with you but the city wife may want you to clean up a bit before you hug her...that is until she gets used to it...don't bring in freshly killed animals & plop them on her kitchen counter expecting her to clean it then cook it...you may make her in to a vegen...or scare her to go gray. Don't go off buying farm equipment or farm animals without telling her first before you bring them home..or you may be in the dog house for a long time...especially if bringing in animals that might need to stay in the house for a bit....don't get upset if she screams that she just cleaned/moped the floor & you walked in covered in mud...just be kind & either help her or back up & strip before you come in or even better strip & hose yourself off & then kindly ask for a towel. She may be city but she would live any wild flowers you pick & bring home for her.....Michele'

Take the citygal out to a poison ivy patch, a poison oak vine, and a poison sumac plant and show her why to leave them alone. The pretty "fuzzy" leaves are not worth it.
I have something to share. I'm a country mouse who married a city mouse. When we got our country cottage my DH was weed eating and trying to get the property under control. He ended up with poison ivy. Bewildered at what the itching rash was, he asked me what I thought it was. Having had poison ivy many times in my life since age 11, I promptly told him. He proceeded to ask me, "How did I get that?" I told him I had observed some poison ivy growing at a certain place on our property and asked if he'd mown there or weed-eated and he told me yes, but had no idea what it looked like. So, I had to "educate" him by taking him out and showing him what it looked like. City mouse is now very cautious!

He should teach her to watch were she steps(poo, snakes, tools, small animals) never put her hands where she can't see(snakes), and don't wear perfume around the bees! She should teach him that placing your finger on one side of your nose and forcefully blowing out the other onto the ground is not acceptable on city sidewalks. Connie
