I have 5 Hens in a pen, and 6 hens or roosters (they were my chicks from this year and I'm not sure what they are yet) in another coop, but they can see each other through the chicken wire. Two days ago I went out to collect my eggs, and I had a hen sitting on the nesting box. So I figured it was odd, because they usually lay in the morning and not afternoon, so I said I'd check back later.. well later turned into the next day. So Yesterday, I went to get the eggs, and she was still sitting there, So i tried to shoo her away, and she got all bowed up. So I picked her up and moved her.. and Collected 10 eggs.
Any Idea why she would be sitting on the eggs? These hens don't have a rooster with them.

we have a broody australorp and a broody buff orpington who squeeze themselves into the same tiny nest box--side by side squished all day long. They're crazy! :) and we collect their eggs every day. . .hope they figure it out soon that they're not hatching!

Yep, she has gone broody. Just keep removing the eggs and taking her off the nest. Sometimes it takes awhile.

or if you are wanting some new baby chicks mark the ones you have under her & take out the ones unmarked each day....just make sure she has water & food near her if its far away from her...some will leave the box to eat most times but sometimes they just don't want to so you need to help out a bit...also don't be worried if you pick her up & she is getting thin...that is normal....Michele'
