Okay, well... here goes. I'm having reactions to just about anything I put on my skin these days - and deodorant is one of the worst problems I'm having. Must be a peri-peri-menopausal thing or something. Yee hah. Anyhow, something told me to check out baking soda - I mean, it can be used for so many other things, right? And we all know its fabulous deodorizing power for the fridge, dishwasher, laundry, teeth, etc... So I did a little research online and found that, yes, it can be used as a deodorant! AMAZING! I lightly dusted a little bit under my arms and I'll be darned - I've been clean, fresh and odor-free all day and night!
I wonder if any of you have been using this as well, and if you have noticed any reactions to it on your skin? I just want to be sure it's "safe" to use for this purpose. I couldn't find anything online about it. I read that some people are sensitive to it because of it's texture (I really only used very little, and I was fine). The solution I found when it irritates the skin is to combine it with cornstarch - it is supposed to make the baking soda feel smoother on your skin. HOWEVER...
I just want to caution anyone who uses cornstarch in any body product: cornstarch is actually something bacteria loves to feed on. When I had MRSA a few years back, I had been using cornstarch baby powder - even under my arms - and my doctor had an absolute fit about it. So, please be careful with any body product you're using with cornstarch, especially if you're using it to diaper babies or on any moist personal areas or if you have a skin condition, okay?
For now, I'm going to see how the baking soda keeps up, unless someone tells me there's a reason I shouldn't use it. I am amazed at how well this works! I can't believe I didn't know about this sooner - think of all the money I could save and all of the chemicals I could have avoided being exposed to all these years! If this really is what it seems to be, I'm going to see that my husband and son use it, too - they need it WAAAY more than I do! ;)
Thanks so much - and happy freshness! ;)

Nini, I make my own deodorant with baking soda, cornstarch, a little lavendar essential oil (for pretty smells). The recipe says you can stop right there and just use the powder mix, or you can (and I do) mash it all up with some coconut oil, which is solid at room temperature, and stuff it into my empty deodorant container. It goes on light and smooth and invisible as long as you don't put it on too heavy. It's great!

Thank you so much for sharing this, Sarah!
I'm going to definitely stick with the baking soda. It's miraculous - I still am amazed. I don't think I can do the cornstarch because of the bacterial thing - after having MRSA, I have become very careful about stuff like that. I wonder, though, if I could use essential oil with just the soda, though? I guess I don't really need to - it's amazing how fresh the baking soda leaves my skin on its own. And by itself, it won't compete with any other fragrance I might be wearing, you know? I'll have to really give that some consideration!
And I just love coconut oil for my eye area - I wonder if the doc would let me use it under my arms, too? I'm wondering how it would work with just the baking soda... I bet my arms would be soooo smoothe! Hmmm... I'm going to have to call her tomorrow. I've been hesitant to call about the baking soda because she had been so upset about me using baby powder with cornstarch... But it sure would be nice to be able to make this into a smooth deodorant stick! Guess I'll just have to break down and call to see what she says! :)
Thanks so much for these ideas - I'm really kind of excited about them, Sarah!

Sarah I would be really interested in your recipe for the deoderant you use. I have been using the salt crystal for many years but sometimes when its hot I have to come in and wash under my arms and reapply. Otherwise I really like the crystal. Is there an extact amount or do you just wing it?
Nini a friend of mine uses the baking soda but not sure how much and if she has any trouble. I will have to ask her to chime in on this thread.

I'd love to have the deoderant recipe too! I have been having nothing but reactions to everything I have tried in the last 6 months. Somtimes it is SO painful! And frustrating to boot.
Do what you love, love what you do. |

Hey Nini,
Isn't it fun getting older :) It's amazing the skin changes that go on as we head towards menopause. I just started getting Excema, at 47 oh well.
Anyway, here is a link to the deodorant recipe I use. I love it and my husband likes it too.

Was your doctor more concerned with you using baby powder or cornstarch? My mom was just visiting and she uses baby powder after her shower. The talc was awful and she already has respiratory problems. I got her to just use cornstarch and she likes it better.
Anyway, I hope it works for you!

Hey there, Sharon!
I know... what is UP with THAT? I've never had such sensitive skin! Thank God for MJF and all our farmgirl sisters - they always know just the right thing to do!!! :)
Thank you for the deodorant recipe! You know, I have heard of using arrowroot powder in place of cornstarch, but had completely forgotten. Maybe that will work? 'Wonder what the doctor will say?! I'll have to see!
The doctor was DEFINITELY concerned with the cornstarch. I got quite the lecture about it, actually - she kind of lost my attention in the process (shame on me!). Basically, using it is like providing food for bacteria to grow on; in moist areas, it's like cake batter for them. 'Sorry - I know how gross that sounds, but I just don't know how else to put it - that's how my doc put it, though. She was very, very adamant about it. I am sure the fact that I had MRSA was a factor in her lecture. I just steer clear of it. I don't use talc, either, but that is becuase of the respiratory issues, as you mentioned.
I honestly am loving the straight baking soda - I'm STILL amazed. It's just odd getting used to not having a stick deodorant, that's all. My husband is going to try it this weekend. He doesn't want to do it during his regular work hours - just in case.
I just love your blog, by the way... the graphics alone make me smile! :)

Nini I used to use the plain baking soda, & it worked fine. I switched to equal parts of coconut, corn starch & bakng soda with a few drops of orange or lavender oil. I was thinking, coconut oil is very antiseptic, it may "protect" against the corn starch. That is added for moisture absorption, I suppose. |

Thanks, Lisa! I would think the coconut oil would be very soothing, too! I just love it! :)
