I recently moved to Wasilla, Alaska, as recent as May. I think we got here about May 8th, and it is so pretty up here. If ever anyone gets a chance they have to see Alaska. We drove here all the way from Michigan!It took 9 days to get here but it was well worth it.
I havent had a chance to see much of Alaska yet. But I plan on it this summer.
Anyway, there are lots of trails around Wasilla for people who do sled dog racing and snow mobiles in the winter. And quads and dirt bikes and walking and hiking and running and horse back riding. Did I mention that people are outside alot here? Even the kids! And while I live in an apartment well 4plex. The apartment complex is out in the country. Its about 8 miles from town. So today, being a very nice day (We've had excellent weather since we got here) I decided to take a walk.
While walking, I found wild Alaskan Roses growing everywhere. I had heard that they grow here. But I had yet to see any. I was so excited that I snapped a photo. And I picked a few to press. I may pick a few more to send as gifts. I've also heard that wild blueberries grow around here. So I am really looking forward to seeing some of those.
Anyway, I wanted to share my picture, of the beautiful Roses. And as a plus, another picture of the mountains where I live standing behind Knik Arm. (which is kinda like a long bay from the ocean.)

| I think it's Wasilla that's known for it's giant vegetables especially cabbage. With all that day length things grow rapidly. My son is working at Denali and started some seeds and couldn't get over how fast they sprouted and grew. |

Actually, it's the whole Matanuska Valley that is known for its LARGE cabbages. The heads get as big as.....your head! One year my mother gave each of us kids a cabbage start that we planted in the front of the garden. We had so much cabbage you would not believe! She made sauerkraut. Lots of sauerkraut. If you can get them grown up before the moose eat them, you're doing good.
I grew up in Palmer and Wasilla Warriors were our high school rivals. But neither school was big enough for its own football team so we had a combined team. I think that's why I hate football. We had to play (pep band) in the worst weather. The cheer leaders wore pants.
Anyway, you can cross the Knik River and turn left and, as I remember, there are some swimming spots along the river bar. Yes, you can go swimming in the rivers in the summer up there. And there are some trails further up the river.
Hiking up The Butte is a nice climb. Not too steep and not too long, but you can see a lot from the top. Most people should know how to get there.
Lazy Mountain is another hike. Quite a bit longer and harder than the Butte, but what a view. In high school my girlfriend and I took horses up Lazy. We also rode from our house on Wolverine Road all the way out to The Butte and rode up it!
Hatcher Pass is a neat place to go. Old mining area. In the winter folks go out there with their snowmachines and have a good time. There's cross-country skiing too.
If you like to canoe, there is a neat loop with portages you can do in the Nancy Lake area.
My parents still live in Palmer. They've been there over 40 years.
Check with the Visitor's Bureau for more information.
I hope you enjoy Alaska. It has lots to offer.

Oh Loyce thank you for all the wonderful tips! I will have to check some of those places out.
We did go to Hatcher pass two weeks ago. It was so pretty, even though the pass was closed. There was still now on the grown. I can't wait to see it when there is no snow and I can get over the pass. Or at least walk over it LOL.
Have you been pack to Palmer or Wasilla recently? I've heard the whole valley has really grown in population. Though, it's still small compared to what I am used too. But I'm really liking it here. :)
And I'll have to look into those big cabbages lol.

Hi, Joanna. The last time I went to AK was for my parent's 50th anniversary in 2009. They got married when AK was still a territory! Yes, the Valley has grown a lot. When I lived there, the license plates all started with "A" or "B", no matter where you were in the state. And even AK plates Outside started with those letters. Now they are up to "F". My drivers license started with "04" and was seven digits long. In 1985, my husband's license started with "5". How times change.

Enjoy your northern life up there in Alaska. I have been there once and long to come back. What a gorgeous place to live. I was shocked to see people swimming and boating up there in the great north. But it was hot there in early June when we were up there. Were I twenty years younger, I would pack up and move up there myself. Thanks so much for sharing the pics.
