Well, I went out into the garden after heavy thunderstorms this morning, just to pull some weeds and check the plants while it's still cool. I was in my tomato bed and noticed that a section had been cleared out - no indication of a plant having been there (maybe a transplant seedling at some point, but nothing "good" missing). As I stepped toward it, my foot sank into the soil almost to the depth of the top of my ankle. Of course, I got a little nervous - but I took my little trowel and dug around. This is one looooong hole, I have to say. It's under the dirt and straw - no opening was evident, but man, it's definitely there. I am not sure what kind of critter it might be, as there really hasn't been much damage to anything out there (amazingingly), other than some slug evidence and the weird little holes on the potato leaves. Oh, and we did have a rabbit, but that has not been an issue in a couple of weeks. Now last year something ate my larger plants - especially the watermelon - toward the end of the season, and many of you suggested it could be a groundhog. I never really found any evidence of that - only little droppings around the yard from the rabbits, and, of course, we had voles and moles (yuck). I haven't seen any vole or mole damage or activity out there this year yet, either... What is your take on this? Could it be a big snake? A groundhog? Voles? Moles? A rabbit burrowing underground??? Oh... and I know that we have squirrels... And there are possums in the neighborhood - one was dead in the alley a few weeks back ('most disgusting scene of carnage I've ever seen - I won't share, it's too gross). And I'm also concerned about mice and >gulp< rats (they've not been here before, but they have been known to be in the downtown area). I'm a little freaked out and would really like to nip this in the bud - any ideas, comments or suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated! Thank you SO much! - Nini

That is why I have a few cats around! They will eat the moles, mice, rats, rabbits when small. Now to find something to deal with this darn coon or skunk who keeps digging up my flowers!!!

Bunnies are my nemesis.. I have NEVER been able to get a crop of beans.
This year....may be the year for bunny stew.
Even though hubs & I saved a litter of baby bunnies from the mouths of our husky/coyote?? mix..

At first I was wandering why there was so many holes & why all the pebbles/stones was on one side in our yard I thought it was a mouse or humans but after few coverup...the chipmunks was upset and last week 2 ago they stick their head out. Not sure but I think they telling me not to cover their holes.
