Hi, everyone,
I am new to this whole thing and am not very computer savvy- although I have a 20yr old son and a 18yr old daughter- i gererally just use my email.
I recently subscribed to MaryJanes Farm magazine and just got the ideabook/cookbook/lifebook and absolutely love it. I just made one of her recipes, it was supposed to be apricot/rhubarb preserves. I used rhubarb from my own plant. I was exicted to use it. Well, i got jelly- not preserves! All the apricots melted away, the flavor is there, but no chunks. There i go "pretending" to be a farmgirl!
I live just 30miles south of Moscow, where MaryJane lives. I don't have a farm, but i pretend i do! Maybe someday.
Any hints to this blog thing and making preserves are much welcomed.
Thanks, ya'll
Mariebelle

Welcome Marie!!! You will love it here...some of the gals are very tech savvy and I know can help you with the blog thing. Blogger sort of walks you through it though..If I can do it you can for sure! How cool that you live so close to Moscow!
I tend to always make jam more often than preserves, and will be doing apricots this week..have a big box in my kitchen now....I just can them a little "firmer" if I want the chunks to stay more chunky. (big help I am , right? sorry) I am sure someone will be some real help...the gals here are wonderful!
anyway..welcome to the family.

Hi Marie! 'So glad you've joined us! Welcome, sister!

Noooo! You're not pretending - you're a "farmgirl at heart!" And the more you read MaryJane's magazines and books, and the more you get to know all of us farmgirls - the more "farmgirl at heart" you'll become! Trust me: I know! I live in a small PA city, in a big old Victorian with a teeny tiny yard... Dream as I might, there's just not much room for a farm in my little corner of the world (although, the yard guy constantly remarks how much he loves my impressive little backyard "farm!" 'Says pretty soon he's going to have to pay US to cut our grass! LOL!)!

You'll find the more you learn about all the wonderful things you can do in the healthy, wholesome, heart-felt farmgirl style, suddenly you're transformed! You'll be amazed, enamored, inspired, enlightened, enriched and just plain filled with farmgirl joy! I know you are going to absolutely LOVE it here!

And the farmgirls? Well, all I can say is that there is just nothing like a MJF Farmgirl - we all come from all walks of life, but we share one common bond: farmgirl hearts! This truly is an amazing sisterhood! These wonderful girls have become a second family to me! I'm sure you will feel the same way, too! :)

So, like Elaine suggested, please do just jump right in! We're so happy to have you with us!

Welcoming hugs -

Nini

Thanks Farmgirls,

I was so excited to read the welcoming notes. I am planning to get right back into MJ's book and relax for the evening. I have vacation this week- our youngest graduated high school- so i will be "playing" with this connection site and the whole MJ farm website. Might even join the Sisterhood!!

Welcome Marie! I was just in your area about a month ago visiting my family in Moscow. Of course we needed to get to Costco during that time. lol. I hope you enjoy your time here. I know I do!

Happy it is, indeed, for me that my heart is capable of feeling the same simple and innocent pleasure as the peasant whose table is covered with food of his own rearing, and who not only enjoys his meal, but remembers with delight the happy days and sunny mornings when he planted it, the soft evenings when he watered it, and the pleasure he experienced in watching it’s daily growth.

Actually, Tina Kay,

I don't enjoy it much here. My heart is really in the southeast: GA, SC, NC- eventually i plan to go back. We've been here 11yrs, My husband retired from the Marine Corps in 2000 and we headed west, he has family here. Put the kids through school, now i am ready to move back south, We spent some time there while on active duty and i fell in love with it. I think that's where i was supposed to be born instead of NJ.
So, i struggle here but try to make the best of it, the winter really boggs me down, so i do better in spring and summer, but my heart is not here. That's why i love MJ Farm so much, it takes me back to where i want to be and keeps me motivated.
Don't know when we will make the move but now that our youngest has graduated high school this year, i hope i don't have to wait much longer. Of course i will miss my kids, but deep down they have both said they will follow us!! They spent 6yrs there and miss it too. But thanks for the welcome

Hi Elizabeth-
That is my middle name! You are right, i do love it here on the farm chat. Here i sit in my apron, listening to my jelly jars "pop" one by one. Trying raspberry/cranberry jelly- might get syrup-- we'll see! But that's part of the fun i guess. My husband makes awesome sourdough pancakes so if i get syrup that's ok to- it will be a good topping to his pancakes!
Next i am going to try a freezer jam.
This vacation i chose to stay put here at home, getting so much done- it's great!

A big Wisconsin hay dare to ya Marie! We are so glad you joined us. The south is hot! My DD lived in SC for the last 4 years and I traveled there a lot. The one thing I like about WI is the green. I did not see much green down south, and if it was green it was usually spray painted. Anyway, my DD really misses the south, so I know where you are coming from. Winter can be a downer.

Howdy,
This is so fun meeting/chatting with new friends. I don't know what i will do when i go back to work on Monday, i will miss chatting throughout the day. Will have to do all my catching up after dinner.
The sun is out today, i might actually get to sit on my hammock and read my book outside!! I have been using my time getting caught up around the house- ya know, those projects that get put off cause there's no time or energy. I miss being a stay-at-home mom/housewife/homemaker. My husband thought i was crazy to use vacation time and stay home!! I am sooo glad i did!

Thanks for all the welcoming letters gals,

Thanks gals,

I do like this- so many different ideas going on. Love all the hints and tid-bits people offer, love the pictures. Love "meeting" people from places that i've been to or have lived at.
This is great!

Welcome Marie! I'm in middle Tennessee. I lived in North Central IL for a few years so I know what you mean about missing the south. I used tol have ice on my north facing front porch through May sometimes. I always drove home in April so I could see spring weeks early!
We have LOT'S of green here! April till October. Take a look at TN when you decide to move. i need some farmgirls closer to me!
Good luck with your jelly!

Connie-
I have considered looking at TN, pictures sure are pretty- much like NC. My daughter has been to Nashville twice for school FBLA and FCCLA national competitions, she liked it there. The second time she went the area was flooded so she couldn't stay in the grand hotel that she did on the first trip.
I am partial to the ocean though so i'm afraid TN would be too far inland for me. That's one reason why i don't like where i am in WA anymore- after 11yrs i am ready for the beach again. I do miss fall in NJ where i grew up and my sisters still live. I am not a winter person. Is it possible to have a farm near the ocean????
