Am currently reading a good book that talks about journaling/notebooking.
it's called How to Think Like Leonardo daVinci by Michael Gelb.
He talks about keeping a notebook with you or writing your thoughts at the end of the day.
The jist seems to be to make you more aware of what is around you and get you thinking.
Making the journal from scratch seems to fit right in with this.

Another good book is called The Decorated Page by Gwen Diehn. It's more about adding visual elements to your journal, personalizing it. I bought it when it came out and look back at it every once in a while for inspiration.

One of our chapter projects was to make journals. We used the hardcover composition books that you can get at an office supply store. We covered the front and back covers, outside and inside, with wallpaper (you could also use wrapping paper, old sheet music, etc). Then doecrated away with ribbon, pictures, old paper, buttons -- whatever was on hand. These make great journals as the pages are already lined.
Here is the journal I made. Mine is very plain -- I'm not very artistic when is comes to this type of thing.
Here's a photo album and journal that Missy (she is the resident artist at this type of thing) made me for my birthday. I love the cover because it has all sorts of vintage pieces that represent some of my favorite things -- music because I play the piano, my favorite book, an old Scrabble tile with my initial, etc.
I choose faith not fear.

It's fun that this topic has come up. When I was in the bookstore recently, I of course checked out the craft type books and I found one called Fabric Art Journals by Pam Sussman. I paged through it and put it down and looked at some other things and then I picked it up again checked the price, put it down again. Gave my self a severe talking to but ended up buying it anyway. Since I had already picked one up, I also bought Book Basics and Beyond by Lisa Vollrath. The gallery of Fabric Art Journals is beautiful. I would love to be that creative.
But I have had an idea of making something called the cranky book. My niece and I are very close and I've wanted to make something for her that is uniquely me and uniquely her. She has sort of a prickly personality and I think a cranky book showing things that make her cranky would be a lot of fun. But I think first I should make some curtains!
