Hi to all of you who make soap!!!
I was wondering where you all have found it to be the most cost effective to get your supplies like oils, lye, butters....
I went online but there are so many sites!

Hi Tracy,
I make and sell soap, too. I order most of my supplies from Wholesale Supplies Plus. They are based in Ohio. I also have 2 local suppliers in the next city if I need something really fast. I really like the customer service at WSP.
I buy lye at a small local hardware store. The bigger stores don't carry it. I have a friend who sells a lot more soap than I do and she buys her lye from a janitorial cleaning supply company.

for oils and butters, I've used Soapers Choice. I do use WSP too quite a bit especially when ordering smaller quantities.

i get my lye from the ace hardware stores. there are a few close to us, that way i don't buy one all out and can leave some for others. they will order extra, too. i go to the local butchers to buy the fat from around the kidney to cook down for my tallow if i am using a tallow recipe. the dogs love the extra they give as they leave a kidney attached from time to time! you can also use the tallow for candles. if you can get in on a co-op in your area, you could get your oils and essential oils pretty reasonable. if you have amish near, you may find some things in bulk for a better price. i have a friend that sells her soap and have been hoping she would post here ! i beleieve she uses the plastic gutter for her soap molds. we used the old jello aluminum molds for our fancier soaps, cardboard boxes, old plastic storage containers, etc. what ever worked for the shape/size. you can google soap molds, and search the clearance of the results. i could bore you to tears, so will stop

just wanted to add that shipping is a stickler anymore~so if they offer free shipping with an order of x amount of dollars or more, check it out good and maybe combine your order with someone elses or just stock up ! otherwise, buying local is always good and alomst as inexpensive anymore.

My lye came in today! Along with my castor oil and coconut oil. I cannot get lye around here so I found a deal with free shipping. I'll post pics when it's ready! Trying hot process tonight; I have only done CP. We'll see....!

Virginia, I've had fun using Pringles cans for making round soap. Just clean the inside. When the soap is ready just make a cut and peel away the cardboard can.

I love the idea of round soap. I do crockpot soap so this is perfect.
As for my oils and lye, I buy from Camden-Grey in Florida. Lye is about $2.00 a pound which is much better than the grocery or farm supply price when I could still get it there.

I order "flaked" lye from Brambleberry. It is so much easier to use, has zero static and pours like a dream. Be aware that most of the lye that's sold in hardware stores isn't pure lye and has other additives.
Sometimes you'd be surprised how many bulk oils - for good prices - can be found at a Sam's Club or even the grocery store.
I trade soap, to a dairy farmer, for fresh whole milk (to put in the soaps). |
