Around here they say you can plant your garden when "the snow is off the Sleeping Ute". By that they mean the Sleeping Ute Mountain which is to the southwest of our house and right in the very SW corner of Colorado. It is on the Ute Mountain Ute Indian reservation and visible from our house to the SW.
USUALLY, the snow is off the mountain about now and, USUALLY, we have planted part of our garden (NOT the plants such as pepper, tomato, etc. because there is ALWAYS a late frost the first part of June)
We have had THREE days of rain, hail, snow . . well just about all there is that is called wet. As of this morning, Saturday, May 21st, this is what the Sleeping Ute Mountain looks like. Not only is the snow not OFF the mountain . . . it just received more.
Hmmmmmm . . . now that really puts a quirk in the garden planting routine.
What's a garden-planting farmgirl to do??

In Michigan (zone 6) I usually wait to plant until Memorial Day. But we've had the opposite extreme..it's been reaching upper 70's several times this month already. I took a risk and put in my beans, squash, and some root crops a little early...we'll see. I will definately wait on the peppers&tomatoes though I don't want to risk them, and even if they go in late they always catch up just fine.

Oh CJ, I agree...the weather has been crazy all over the country. I guess this is where a farmgirl learns patience. Mother nature is in charge and we just have to sit back and try and understand what it is she is telling us! Lol....
Good Luck with your planting. At lest the mountain is beautiful to look at!

CeeJay, it's been whacky here too. I was just thinking how slow everything is growing. I would have been picking beans already by now but they are only about 6" tall so far. I still haev half a garden to plant. So don't feel bad. You will get yours planted sooner or later. I hope this means that fall and winter will be late too.

YAY!!! The snow is off the Sleeping Ute since it has been a warm week . . . and I planted the SEEDS part of my garden today!!!
My "barefoot farmgirl of southwest Colorado" bare feet were SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO happy to get into that garden dirt!!
Ah-h-h-h-h-h!!!!

Zone 3 here. June 1 is our last frost day. We are planting next week when my hubby is off work. He enjoys digging in the dirt as much as I do. I just worry about getting it all watered everyday. We are having a hot dry spring. 85 today with no rain in the forecast. It's hard to keep the ground wet when it's so dry. I am going to use paper mulch this year. It should make the soil stay moist longer and I can water from above instead of installing soaker hoses. We get our water from a well but the water table has changed over the past few years and it doesn't fill up as fast as it used too. I am learning how to conserve water and it feels really good. I used to waste so much water but not anymore. It is becoming a precious element in so many parts of the world. I hope all your gardens bloom and produce. Happy Gardening!!

Like I said . . . it's the saying around here.
When the snow is off the Ute . . it's time to plant!
I went to the nursery/greenhouse that I shop at frequently and is less than two miles from my house this morning. Went to purchase my tomato and pepper plants.
This is the sign just outside the main entrance.
