I really am not a horse woman, but I heard on our local news that a horse was diagnosed at Washington State Univ (WSU) with "horse herpes virus." It does not affect humans but can be fatal for horses. I thought any of you who have horses could google what it is and what to look for. Again, this is just info...I know nothing else. If I hear more I will post.

Hi Buffy, Thank you for posting this! This is a huge issue for horse owners. It is devastating as it is highly contagious and incurable. Those most at risk are folks who show/compete their horses at events. The state of Colorado, New Mexico and several others have just initiated new procedures to be followed for transporting horses.
We live in New Mexico and this was put out today by the Livestock Board: The Office of the State Veterinarian is recommending: 1) Rescheduling of all major equine events (gatherings of large numbers of horses) for at least the next 7 - 10 days. 2) The only way to prevent the spread of EHV-1 is to stop the movement and commingling of horses. 3) Horse owners, who suspect their horse may have been exposed to EHV-1, should contact their veterinarian immediately. 4) The neurological form of EHV-1 is a reportable disease in New Mexico; hence suspect horses should be reported to the New Mexico Livestock Board straight away.

Thanks Margaret. I thought it might just be a problem for Washingtonians, but seems there is more to it. Is the virus worse in spring? or anytime of year? I hope all horse owners heed the info. It must be a terrible disease. Thanks again.
