I am planning to have my little girls store open by my birthday (September 15). The fall collection is designed and now I am getting ready to start the pattern making procedure. I am going to use Big Cartel with my own domain name. My company is A Little Bit of Red but the .com is already taken by a interior decorating company. Should I use an alternate suffix such as .biz or .net, or do a little different take on my name? My name has a lot of meaning in it and I already have a professionaly designed logo, so changing the name is not an option.

This can be a challenge for sure. Folks will search for you by using the search engines if they don't know your url. Keep it as easy and natural as possible and .net is very common to use. Quick question,
have you checked to see if " Little bit of red" or "a bit of red" has been used? Sometimes a slight variation will do the trick and land you a .com. Also, it will be easy to promote the slight variation on your business cards, letter heads, bags etc.

Wishing you much success!!

the word "little" is essential, "little bit of red" is availablein a .com the name is a play on the nickname for my oldest daughter and the obsession her little sister has with wearing red. because my oldest is exceedingly tiny, i HAVE TO sew for her if anything is going to fit properly and because the other wont wear any outfit that doesn't have red on it i often find myself embelishing hand-me-downs to make them acceptable. it also fits in with my sweethearts little girl who i also sew for as she is both tiny and a redhead.

Maybe you can add the - sign between the words? Like "A-little-bit-of-red'

Just a suggestion :)

You could put an underline ( _ ) in between each word in order to keep the actual name yet with enough of a variation. For example "A_Little_Bit_of_Red". It's a cute name and one I'd certainly try my darndest to hang on to given it's background. I hope you can find something that works!

BTW, my b-day is a day earlier than yours. Astrology kind of intrigues me so I'm always curious if people under the same 'sign' are similar in personality. :)

Best of luck in your ventures!

thanks for all your help....underscores are not used in domain names, but with dashes it is available in a .com at the moment, i am leaning toward the .net....it seems that if someone tried the .com and doesnt find me, that .net would be the next thing they would try.

karen, birthdays and astrology facinates me too. according to the birthdate charts, my sweetheart and i are a perfect match (we found eachother after 12 years apart and discovered neither of us had ever gotten over the other). also, my youngest son's birthday is 2 days after my sweethearts and the are so close in personality (this is NOT his father so the similarities are not genetic). i first dated this guy for a year in highschool and it always seemed errie to me how much this child was like him.

what about Lil Bit O Red ?? I would alter the name slightly so you don;t wind up in a lawsuit with the other peeps who have the .com. If you go for this, use godaddy and look for online coupons first. Then I would get .com,.net,and.biz if you can. .com & .net are the most in demand.

Hello,
I would stick to a .com if at all possible. Most people do not understand the, .com, .biz, .net, thing. They do a search and if they can not find it they may just give up. Do you have a facebook page? I to had a problem getting my Markets name for a .com address. I was lucky though I could change my name to fit the web site. I am not sure you can really get sued but some people are really protective about those things. But what ever you decide on Good Luck!!!!!!

the other "a little bit of red" is an east coast state llc and llc name protection only applies to the state it is licensed in. i havent started a facebook page yet, because my first collection is still in teh planning phase and i don't know what i'd say about it yet. i dont want to give too much info before its actualy ready for release. i'm so excited though! sweetie is going to make me some virtural paperdolls for my store so that customers can play with the different pieces and see how the different collections work together. i'm making my basic slopers on saturday so i can start pattern making next week. i hope to have my domain name bought in the next week or so. after i have the domain, i can get my product labels made and start sewing. since i'm doing all the work myself its going to be a small collection of only 10 pieces. this time i'm only doing sizes 2/4, 6/8, and 10/12 but hope to add infant sizes for spring.

A little break down on internet addy-isms

.com is the most common address . and was originally designated for commerce based sites. In the net boom of the late 90s, the web was full of all kinds of sites that wanted to make a profit in some way, hence the commonality of .com.

.org is for non profit organization sites, .gov is for government run sites.

.net is pretty neutral and stands for "network". Everything on the internet is considered part of the network though, so it's used as a neutral/catch all site address.

Foreign countries end with an abbreviation of it's country: .UK for United Kingdom, .CA for Canada, etc

You may want to consider a .US?

You can also set up a redirect so something like "www.find.littlebitofred" would come to your site also. All the major sites have several phrasings and spellings of their site reserved so it goes there automatically.

Whatever you choose, it's important to keep it simple as possible. You want someone to be able to find it from memory and silly things like dashes and zeros for o's make it impossible to find your site unless they're reading your business card.

"After eating an entire bull, a mountain lion felt so good he started roaring. He kept it up until a hunter came along and shot him. The moral: When you're full of bull, keep your mouth shut.” ~Will Rogers
