Hi ladies!

Quick question: has anyone ever tried "the grow box"? It's an advertisement insert in MaryJane's April/May issue? I was considering purchasing one but before doing so, I thought I'd ask my ladies if any of you have made the purchase, and if so, have had any luck with it. Would love to know! Thanks!

I installed several of these for a client three years ago. I was very impressed with the overall concept of the product. However we found that the soil that came with the kits he purchased was not great. It either held too much water and the plants suffered or did not wick up the water from the reservoir so the plants would dry out until they got rooted all the way to the bottom. So after the first season we ended up removing the original soil and replacing it with a commercial spec potting soil mix for container gardens. Since then he has had two good seasons growing herbs, strawberries, small varieties of tomatoes and peppers. If the containers are in a very hot or sunny location you do need to keep an eye on the water as they will not usually go for a whole week without filling.

Hope this is helpful. Good luck with your garden!

Cheers! ~ Marilyn

Kate-
I think that Lowes has either this exact thing or something very similar. I was looking at them earlier in the season- I want to say they sold for about $30 a piece there.
The looked interesting, and seem like they would work, although you could probably get the same results from almost any other container garden as well. Of course the key to keeping "containers" is to be diligent with water and (organic) fertilizer.
Good luck!
