Last year I got the great idea to make DH and I matching flannel shirts out of his families Tartan plaid. Our last name is Wilson and the family book says the Wilson's were from the Gunn clan We have a book that has a picture of the plaid I have been to many sites but can't find anything close. It seems there are several interpertations of the Gunn tartan. It is a predominintly green backround with 4 black plaid stipes crossed with a thread of red.
Anyone know a good site for this type thing? Since it is Christmas colors I thought it would be a good gift. Help me find the flannel if you can.
The last husband was Irish decent (McDermott) and so I have made my sons many shirts, boxers, PJ pants from the black watch plaid. It is easy to find. My oldest, Sean, even had me make him a kilt to wear to his senior prom. It was great!

I don't know a site but I do know that there are places in england/ scotland/Ireland that make tartans but htey can be very expensive I am from the campbell clan and looked into a girl tartan traditional dress costume over 1000.00 so I did not do it. Black watch is the Campbell clan just curious as to why you used that for McDermott.

Don't remember the name of it, but there is a British Isles store in Old Sacramento a part of Sacramento, California. They have every tartan in ready made items and I think they have fabric also. If you can get a merchant's guide to Old Sac., you could probably figure out who they are call them.

They have the Gunn clan in ancient and modern patterns, The Wilson clan and my mother's clan...the Duncans. My grandmother was a Wilson. My husband's grandmother was a Campbell.

I have a couple of kilts, one is the kilt for out bagpipe band, I think it is the Barclay... I have some Blackwatch plaid, which is just the stand-by, you know.
There are usually a couple different color schemes on the same tartan, there can be ancient and modern, and a hunting plaid which is muted colors to blend in with nature etc...
My advice is to find out what your family tartan or tartans are, then go to a regular fabric store and see if you can find something close.
Otherwise you could be paying up to $30 a yard from a mail order tartan store!

Most scottish sites that sell tartan plaid fabrics only sell the real heavy 100% wool, for making kilts, dresses, plaids etc... For cotton flannel, check out walmart, my local store has a bunch of plaid flannel for a buck a yard!

to aunt george hey maybe I am related to your husband grandmother. My fathers family came from the south I think kentucky not sure as my parents divorsed when I was younger than 4.

Thanks for the ideas. I have been looking for the plaid I described above everywhere. Of course I started cheap and even after season but no luck. I really do not want wool as it would be to hot for GA. It does get cold enogh for a flannel shirt however.
Sunshine, The Mdermott's were part of the Campell of Argyle clan at one point so that was the tartan they used.
Aunt George thanks for your site I will go look there. There seem to be lots of variations in the interpretations. Although I have found the Gunn name I can never seem to find the tartan pictured in the family history.
