| Since crochet is about the only thing that I already know how to do, I have decided to start crocheting again, until I can teach myself some other crafts. I have started an afghan, a lap throw. Thought I would ask if anyone else crochets much, maybe we can chat about what we are doing, talk about patterns. Whatever else tickles our fancy. |

I have crocheted for years. I just bought a couple of books full of crocheted edgings. I love crocheting with the very light threads and tiny needles. I thought it would be fun to buy plain things and then add edging to them. I'm still looking for the magazine Decorative Crochet. Every time I find it on the internet is says that they are no longer a dealer or something like that. I used to make doilies from that magazine all the time not because I would ever use them but because I enjoyed making them.
Lately though I have been hooked on knitting. I just bought the yarn and needles to give socks a try.

Yes I crochet a ton in the 10 years I have been crocheting have have made enough stuff to have been crochet 90 years. Just a little over the top. But I have lots of other stuff I do too.

| I crochet a couple afghans when I was a teenager, but haven't done it in a long time. I have started a lap throw, and I found a pattern for a sunbonnet potholder that I am just dying to make! |

I think I have the same pattern for the sunbonnet potholder in my "Have to make this" pile! Is it yellow with a pink bow and flowers? I believe I linked to it through one of the threads.
The only things I have crocheted are dishcloths (when I am tired of knitting them) and tropical sore bandages for Relief Society. (We send them to leper colonies) Crocheting is one of those things I would like to learn in more depth, but just don't have the time.
Post a picture of your afghan when you're done!!

so mumof3 let me guess you have a relief society your LDS I assume just curious I am just sounded like you are I have made 200 leper bandages that is what I used to teach my oldest daughter to crochet ( leper bandages that is)

Hi Sunshine! You would be correct!! I love making those bandages. Have you heard of Rising Star Outreach? It was started by a woman here in Georgia (LDS) and that is where all of our bandages go. She came and did a presentation for us and showed the people living in the colony and their reactions when they receive the bandages - they hugged them and tears came to their eyes as they were handed a small rolled bandage. More from the fact that they were made for them by someone who doesn't even know them than the bandage itself. It is a joy to do a bandage for them.

Ladies in my ward just leave them on my doorstep now days and I deliver them to the humanitarian center in provo they sort where they go as I don't really care as long as they are helping someone somewhere. So that is neat. Never heard of rising star out reach that sounds real neat.

I have done the knitted ones but never the crocheted.. I like doing them too, and havn't done one in awhile..guess I should get one going!!

Doesn't it just make you feel great to be part of such a marvelous work! I love that the church does good for everyone, everywhere....member of our faith or not.
That is unconditional love.
I love to go to the Humanitarian Aid center, or the cannery, or DI, or help at the Bishop's Storehouse...it just feels so good to part of something so positive!
The church is great! pass it on!

I just posted a free pattern on my site if any one wants it. If you don't work in size 30 thread and 11 hook you can do it in size 10 thread and a 5 or 6 hook depending on your tension

I love crocheting but I generally do that in the winter, as in the spring, summer and fall there is way too much going on outside!! I've not picked up my crochet hook since March or April!! I miss it, as it is very relaxing........it is my way of de-stressing. Before I put my hook up for the summer I was also trying to learn how to knit, started on a plain and simple top and got as far as into the shaping of the armholes and neckline and gave up. Got frustrated!! and discouraged!!

they are the same in that you use yarn or thread and you make some type of fabric item out of them you use two hands for both and both have a yarn over. End of similarities. They have differnt drapes and stitches differnt looks and feel. Knitting is typically slower if you are using the exact same size yarn or thread. the lace holes in botha re formed in differnt manners. With knitting you have all your stitches on your needle with crochet only the stitches you are currently working with unless it is tunisian crochet also know as afghan crochet. I would rather drop a titch in crochet than in knitting alot less work. Similar yet differnt.

Melissa- My friend and I started the sunbonnet potholder Thursday night. After ripping it out 4 times, I finally got the crown done!! My friend's sofa was covered in curly yellow yarn for most of the evening! Apparently I needed a picture. The brim is going much better. But, I am not looking forward to making the bow- I believe the treble stitch is going to give me trouble!! :)

| I do a lot of crocheting mostly hats, but some of it is amigurumi, the japanese form of crocheting in the round. Amigurumi are usually tiny little stuffed animals or crocheted objects that are given faces and made into doll-like figures - like fruit or veggies... |

I read the supply list wrong and got Sugar and Cream for the lace frill. Well, it is hilariously HUGE!!! It has to be the #5 pearl cotton in white. I hope you got that. When you look at the lace frill directions it doesn't "read" very clear. But from trial and error (many!!) my friend and I figured this much out for row 3 -... *ch3, sc in next lp, ch2, 2dc,ch3,2dcin next loop- should actually be 2dc in same loop, then ch2, scin next lp,ch3....I am going to keep working on it though. It's good practice for me. But, it looks like those "I made it larger so you can see it on TV" type of things!!

I love to crochet. My grandmother loved to knit. She tried to teach me when I was young, but I just couldn't get it. I know it was because I was left handed and she was right. I used to think she was snobbish when she would say, 'crocheting is poor man's knitting.' Know I just chuckle since I would remember at times she would crochet edging on a project she was working on. I taught myself to crochet after I was married as I loved the patterns of all my mother-in-laws afghans. It took a year of practice before I felt I had gotten I "right." I've tried all sorts of crochet projects other then afghans and I keep going back to them. I also like to do Christmas tree skirts. I've never kept one for myself. My current project is a lap throw for a sorority sister of mine in Delta Zeta's colors. She has always loved to sit with a throw over her. We even introduce each other as my sister, just how close we have been since college.
The other project which is my favorite is a baby afghan. I usually keep two on hand. One for a boy and one for a girl. I then buy a wicker laundry style basket, line it with the afghan and fill it with all sorts of goodies and at least three packages of diapers. One package is disposable and the other two are cloth, one prefolded and one not. I always get strange looks on that one, since I tell them they make great burp clothes and then wonderful rags. I've yet to have someone use cloth diapers on their baby. Someday I hope that will happen. I do always get the reply back when the baby is about two weeks old, what great burp cloths they make.

A lot of older peopel say that as around 1900 the rich knitted and the poor crocheted I am not sure why but it was pretty much the case althought he rich used crochet as accents and would purchase it it was never considered as fine an art as knitting it had something to do with the way the hands where held looked more elegant knitting. And the poor crocheted as it was faster and they could sell it to make money I know there are more reasons than that but those are the ones I remember right now. something also to do with the potato famine alot of irish crochet and they where considered poor

Karin, to be perfectly honest, I am not sure of the size. The only yarn that had a size was a #3. The only craft store we have here doesn't really carry yarn, so I had to depend on WalMart. I do know for sure that it is cotton and not acrylis, beyond that, who knows!! If what I got doesn't work, I will have to go up to Lexington and try to find exactly what I need. Thanks for the tip!
