Since we built the barn in winter on frozen ground we couldnt put in a proper floor (plan on cement with rubber pad over it) we ended up with a lake in the stall when the snow melted. We depserately needed a temporary fix until the ground thaws completely and dries up. Hubby took heavy pallets and fit them very snugly over the water and screwed plywood over that. We then put about 2-3 inches of coarse sand and good deep bedding over that. It is working perfect! Gib now has a nice dry place to be (outside is pure mud!) and is quite safe and happy. He didnt even hesitate to walk on it and is now rolling in it daily (his fav past time). If you ever need a temporary fix for wet try this! The farrier ok'ed it as safe too. Later this summer it will be torn out and replaced with permanant floor. Since he does his "business" outside we dont even have to worry about it getting soiled with urine and feces! The sand is heavy so it drops to the bottom and we can keep fresh bedding in it easily too!

Good idea, Connie. Where we built our chicken-goat barn, it gets really flooded when it rains hard. We did put plywood in the middle stall. But I need to do it in the 2 outer stalls now. It gets so wet. ANd I have hens and roos in those 2 right now.

for you that have flooding problems in barns/stalls, think about a french drain system, it will help direct water away from the area you want to keep dry, and it is an easy DIY project...

this post has perfect timing. we have decided to milk in pasture. so we are putting the pump and all gear on a trailor. i will drive it over to pasture. so we have a 10 x20 shed there now. well i went today to move cows and my shed was under water. when irragation came on it runs right straight into my shed. papa said he could move it. so when i do i wanted a clean floor for milking. so i will do the pallets and plywood floor. good idea thanks so much sherrye
