Hello Farmgirls,
I am opening a Local, Organic, specialty foods (gluten, allergy free, diabetic ect...) market. I am looking for suggestion of brands that you buy or would buy at a market of this type. Thank you for all your help.

Hi Betty Jo -

I have a really hard time in my area finding low sodium items - baking powder, baking soda, catsup, salad dressing, peanut butter, etc. One of the brands is Hains, but I have to order it on-line and the shipping charges are very high. Perhaps others in your area would appreciate low sodium items if you could carry them.

Good luck!

low carb food is getting harder to find as Atkins falls from popularity. Something I would love to find locally and would pay dearly for is low carb biscuit mix. There's a product called carbquick but I can only find it from one online retailer. I think Bob's Red Mill has something like it, but again, I never see it in the store.

I consistently buy millet and millet cereal.

I also regularly buy dried figs and prunes.

And low or non-fat almond milk, rice milk, and soy milk.

Local cheeses, (especially goat cheese), eggs, and jams are favorites too.
I love jam: strawberry rhubarb, plain strawberry, raspberry (seedless if I can get it) and blueberry. Jam is my weakness.

Sometimes I buy dried blueberry chips. They are pricey but tasty!

I also love beeswax candles.

I enjoy finding books at my organic market but I shy away from expensive books that offer all-inclusive lessons about anything like "All you need to know about Homesteading." Less expensive, single-topic books are better for me (how to build a chicken coop, keeping bees, chicken breeds, getting started with goats)...

I hope this helps,

Karen

Thank you for all your advice on products to stock in my market. It is amazing how many products are out there. Makes my brain spin..... Any other suggestions are most welcome.

At our local co-op, the things I buy most often are:

organic milk and half & half
organic yogurt
local produce
organic coffee
grains, nuts & seeds
dried fruit

They carry the "Montebello" brand of organic pasta - comes from a monastery in Italy. Absolutely the best dried pasta I've had.

Hope this helps!

You might look into carrying some of MaryJane's foods in bulk. Like the budget mix, chili mac, bare burrito, Jambalaya etc. Most of the organic stores around here that I have seen usually have some sort of bulk section and it would be great for you to be confident in the quality before you invest in something so large.
