Yesterday I worked on my strawberries. We have tiered strawberry boxes on the patio (11 tiers) plus an old double kitchen sink. I took every plant out and then added fresh soil and clipped all the dead stuff off them then replanted them. I ended up with 185 plants. I was amazed. Needless to say I put 85 plants in my veggie garden as I ran out of room in the boxes and there isn't enough patio room for more boxes. Today I will mulch them to keep them happy. I have never seen so many strawberry plants, I just hope they give us lots of berries. Yum!

Ingrid, we planted 200 strawberry plants 5 years ago in 7 raised rows about 35 feet long. Just Sat. my hubby weed whacked out there. I think he whacked all the ones on top of the rows though. He meant well, but a man with a weed whacker is dangerous! I have not been a good tender of that patch but they still grow and give us tons of berries. I had taken some of them last year and put in a raised bed closer to the house where I could water them. I need to clean it out now. I see flowers on the plants!! I can hardly wait for that first fresh berry. It's always the best.

I laughed when I read your comment Kris about "a man with a weed whacker is dangerous!" My strawberries are still covered as we are expecting snow on Sunday. But, I did take a peek yesterday afternoon and I have little baby strawberry plants that are coming up around my raised beds. I am hoping to transplant some into a larger bed to expand my "crop." Wish I had as many plants as Ingrid and you do!!I want to make lots and lots of jellies and jams this season...

I actually just used the last of my frozen berries the other day. So I have to have some more. They are so good.
Melody, sometimes I have to follow him around just so he won;t whack someting down. He has gotten my clematis way too many times. You'd think he'd learn. So now I have sticks and all kinds of things sticking up around what I want to keep. Gotta watch those guys!

ok, I'm jealous, I can't get strawberryplants to grow here in the desert..i have tried full sun, shade, lots of water, little water. They look good..the heat comes and there they go. What kind do you grow..everbearing, june? Where do you get them? Ahh, I want strawberries.!

Wow,now thats alot of plants! I just bought a dozen more plants-- to add to the 4 or 5 I had last year...guess I have no idea what a "real" strawberry patch is, but the kids enjoy walking out and grabbing fresh berries here and there. I love them and there is just no comparison between home grown and store bought (just like all other fruits and veggies!)
Think I'll go grab some more! Thanks for the inspiration.

Don't worry Laurie your strawberry plants will multiply and before you know it you'll have lots. Mine are everbearing and I seem to get two really good feeds one in June and then September where lots of berries come out at the same time and then sporadic the rest of the time. I just used my last bag of frozen berries so looking forward to June.

Thanks Ingrid..I havent planted my dozen new plants as I am contemplating wehre I want to put them. the 4 or 5 I had last year were just in a large patio pot, so now I want to figure out where I can put a true strawberry patch. The kind I got are "Seqouia" which are supposed to produce from early summer through Autumn- everbearing type- which sounds good to me!

I just bought 50 plants today! I have a raised bed that had strawberries a neighbor had given me. They all died from no weedin or waterin all summer. My MIL had a heart attack and I was unable to tend any of my gardens. This year will be different.
I had a gift certificate given to me by a friend for my favorite nursery. I got strawberries, sweet potato plants, peppers, marigolds, and petunias!

So what do you all do with those frozen berrys??? My DH would catch me munching on the
berrys and tell me to stop, so now I have a freezer full of frozen berrys. Should have
just ate them as I picked. Well at any rate other than jam and jelly what else could
I do with them? |

My favorite is what I call a milk shake but others call it a smoothie. You can play around with this quite a bit.
1 cup of frozen strawberries
1 cup of milk (this can be any milk really, almond, soy, cow, what ever! Also you can use part milk and part juice, I've been known to use 1/4 cup of oj! and 3/4 cup of milk)
sweeten (sugar, or splenda, etc)
1 teaspoon vanilla
you can add a few slices of frozen bananas or a handful of frozen blueberries as well!
Any way put all in blender and blend till smooth, if you need to sweeten it, sweeten before you blend, cause it will be super thick, like a thick thick milk shake and won't be able to get sweetener/sugar to blend into it after it's blended.
To me this taste like the best strawberry milk shake in the world! My kids love it too!

Hi Alee-
I've only bought plants at Lowes- they have some beautiful plants this year here- Seqouia variety that supposedly bear fruit from early summer to fall (we'll see about that...lol). In any event I bought 12 plants the other day, but at $2.48 each, they dont come cheap!
Last year we only had about 5 plants in a patio pot and got a few strawberries at a time. I too would like to be able to go out and pick a nice bowl of strawberries.

Laurie- Yes I don't think I can justify spending that much on live plants this year. I am going to give the dormant bare root ones a try. They are only $3 for ten so if the experiment doesn't work out, that's okay. I am going to spend more money on some more reliable plants...such as tomatoes and peppers. :)

Alee, I wish you luck, I wish I hadn't paid for them, they are doing nothing! They have been there a month and I see nothing, I think they completely died! I bought two for 1.00 each at the local feed and seed store (live plants) which is about what 3 times the price as the bare root ones? But, worth it since they are actually living! And I think I just waisted 3 dollars on the bare root ones. Tomorrow I am going into town to buy more 1.00 ones....... :( I bought the bare root ones at Walmart. I wish I would of spent the 3 dollars for 3 from the feed and seed shop, at least I would of had 3 live plants, instead of 10 dead ones!

There is a garden store around here where you can buy a flat of 100 strawberries for about $25. That's what we did last year and most of them made it through the winter. I didn't get a very good crop last year though. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. Not enough water? Fertilizer? I don't know, maybe a farmgirl strawberry whisperer can clue me in on how to get more strawberries than I know what to do with.

I read some where the first year you are to pick off most the buds, if you want a larger crop in coming years. The first year needs to go to the plant establishing it's root system, etc. but, I have no true experience with strawberries, I have only picked wild ones, never grew my own, till this year. I sure wish they were that cheap here, I would of jumped on them like a duck on a june bug!

I have had oodles of runners and I have many strawberry plants and this is their third spring. Every year they blossom and eventually I will only see a few strawberries.
Do I need to start dividing them? I am wanting strawberry smoothies too you know.. but what could be happening?
Any advice? |

I planted Ozark strawberries this year-last years berries were washed away in the flood we had. They're bare root, from Guerneys. They seem to be doing okay. They're supposed to be light frost tolerant, so I'm hoping we don't have any more severe winter weather.
