Does anyone know of "brands" or a website that lists which brands of fruits and veggies either canned or frozen are grown and packaged in the United States? Thanks for any info!

| I would love to see this list. Now that fresh produce has to be labelled with country of origin, even my Walmart has large amounts of produce from other countries sitting there and the bin with USA produce is almost empty. I'm very interested in seeing this list. |

Same with me, and I've read there is more chance of contamination with foods processed in other countries and more chemicals used. I don't care a bit to pay the extra for organic or US grown and packaged foods. I'm just having trouble finding them. Even well known brands like Dole is not from the United States anymore. It's a shame.

A LOT of the salmonela outbreaks have been Del Monte foods packaged outside the United States and similar brands with the same packaging. Even the frozen birds eye veggies are not from the United States

| I've e-mailed Pictsweet, Eden, Farmers Market brands to ask if they are grown and produced in the USA. Will let you know what I find out. Also, there is a small company called USA Grown in NY, I believe. Let's work together to make a list. |

| I also e-mailed Hanover. It's disconcerting to realize that the certification USDA Organic can be given to food grown outside the US. Other countries have an agreement with USDA and so if they say it was grown organically, they can put the USDA organic emblem on their product. Yikes !!! |

I read that too, it's very frustrating! I found a market a few miles from our home that sells all locally grown produce. you can even subscribe to a veggie and fruit basket and pick it up each week. And then there is the pick your own farms. But I'm not having much luck in finding canned and frozen produce. This is much harder than I expected.

I find it is very local I think, but Stillwell frozen vegetables are from Stillwell, Oklahoma. Mainly okra, but sometimes zucchini too. I could never find Stillwell frozen okra in NYC, or many other places where I lived. And all I could find was brands from Mexico. And then some one on this board said that it was because Stillwell brand came from Stillwell, Oklahoma. Well, duh, I only live 15 minutes from Stillwell, Oklahoma (it's just over the boarder from Kansas on the very boarder of Oklahoma), I see signs on the highway to Stillwell ALL the time, and have passed through it to many times to count, and never put two and two together! But, if you have Stillwell frozen veggies at your local store (walmarts here sell them most, but some of the other stores do sometimes-hit and miss, as well) they are from Stillwell, Oklahoma, USA!

About Stilwell frozen foods.....
Stilwell is actually owned by Flowers Industries, based in Thomasville, Ga. They are also the parent company for Mrs. Smith's (frozen pies), Mrs. Freshley's and Oregon Farms. It also makes fresh bread, rolls and snacks under the brand names Nature's Own, Cobblestone Mill, Whitewheat and BlueBird. And I think they may own the home delivery service, Schwan's.
They do have a plant in Stilwell, OK....but it is not locally owned. Flowers bought Stilwell Foods in 1976.
Flowers is the third largest wholesale baker in the United States. They also own 55% of the Keebler Foods Company.

Good luck! It is getting more and more difficult to track down these things! You just keep running into brick walls with who owns who.

Thanks for the info......but every thing you posted about is still in the USA right? I think that's the main point it being from the USA, not which state exactly right?
I'm working on producing and preserving as much of our own food as possible too. Do you know a good source of recipes for such, I want a good bread and butter zucchini pickle recipe (one that will work with cauliflower, beets, and carrots would also be awesome! As I love the bread and butter veggie mix!). and I would love a tomato jam recipe, same with mulberry jam!

Heather, I'm not sure, but I thought it was important to know where the food was grown, as food grown outside the U.S. is often shipped in and processed here. So if the country uses questionable agriculture practices (such as claiming something is organic when it isn't), one would be aware of this.
As for processing your own food. I rely heavily on the Ball Blue Book. The cost is low and the directions simple. It contains lots of recipes, including a number of pickle recipes. Or you can purchase the Mrs. Wages mix for bread and butter pickles. As for the jam, I use Sure Jell and follow the recipe chart.

Well, Thomasville is not too far from me. I did buy one little Mexican tomato yesterday at Shop Rite. It was calling my name. I just got one so I don't feel too bad. All this info is very helpful. I refuse to buy fruits that aren't from USA. I wondered about the bananas from Fla. though. Are they really grown there? I have never seen a banana tree but I guess they could be grown in Fla. This is definetely making me want to grow all our own food.

I heard back from Pictsweet. They answered my question about where grown but not about where processed.
All products are grown in USA expect the following:
Broccoli
Cauliflower
Okra

Hey Mikki - I know that Stahlbush brand of frozen veggies is all U.S. sourced - I'm not sure how far their distribution reaches as they are located in Oregon and I'm in Washington so I haven't checked any stores as far east as you:) They also do canned pumpkin, squash and sweet potato under the Farmer's Market label.
