Well Mutt and Jeff from the water department showed up on the 5th of April and asked for a glass from the cupboard. They proceeded to run the tap, fill a glass (each) and took a sip. "Mutt" swished water (kinda like you see the wine conniseurs do) and exclaimed to Jeff "tastes fine to me!" Then they took a few vials and said they were off to the lab to run some tests. Before they left I requested a copy of the report. A few days later Mutt or Jeff called stating that there was nothing wrong with my water and again, I reminded him that I would like a copy of the tests. Got it in the mail this week and couldn't decipher a thing, but I kept it.
TODAY in one of our local newspapers on the FRONT page mind you was this article:
CITY WATER UNDER SCRUTINY
Tests conducted on the City of MEnominees drinking water have indicated a violation of state standards. The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality sets the standards. The samplintg shows too much haloacetic acids in the water. City officials said that there is no immediate risk and people do not need to stop drinking tap water or boil it before drinking. The warning from MDEQ includes infomration that long term use of the water by some people could cause health problems.
After reading this I nearly jumped out of my chair---I KNEW it! I was RIGHT all along. The thing is no one else in my family could detect it at all, but I KNEW I was right.
I still have not taken any tap water and continue to buy distilled water and bottled water. I am going to keep on top of this until I get more answers.
After two days of not being able to drink the city water, I contacted our water department early this afternoon to have it tested. We have lived here for 16 years and I have had no difficulty with our water until a few days ago when I couldn't even drink a cup of tea I made with the tap water. There will be a guy coming tomorrow after noon to "test" the tap water.
How do I know for sure if there is nothing wrong with my water? Do I just take his word for it? Request a copy of the final test results or should I do this through a private organization? Never had to do this before, but my water is BAD. We haven't done anything with the plumbing or the hot water heater at all that might affect the taste. And, it doesn't smell overly chlorinated, but it tastes foul. Ugghh...
What would cause my tap water to suddenly become unbearable to drink?

Hi Melody! Sometimes they could be working on pipes in the area (without you knowing it) and it can affect your water. I would definately request a copy and/or explanation. I wouldnt just "take his word for it" if the water really tastes that bad, then something is not right! Didnt you have all kinds of road work done in front of your house about this time last year? I seem to remember you posting about the construction and noise etc. Good luck- let us know what the culprit was if/when you find out! Smiles, Laurie Farmgirl Sister#1403

Hi Melody~ I agree with Laurie - sometimes the cold be working on the pipes. Usually when they do that they let us know. I would absolutely ask for a copy of the report. I wouldn't use the water at all if it doesn't taste right. If it tastes foul chances are it is foul! Where drinking water is concerned I would alwasy err on the side of caution. Please keep us posted!

They did road work last November and it never tasted any different. That was one of the questions the guy at the water department asked. We are using bottled water right now. Since we pay for our water here in town I want to make sure it's drinkable! I will definitely ask for a copy of the results.
Will keep you posted... |

Hi Melody! Wow! You must be really sensitive to your environment, and that's a very good thing!!! Hope you continue. I googled about the haloacetic acids to read up on what it is all about(it sounded awful to me) and here is a site I found. http://toxsci.oxfordjournals.org/content/60/2/232.full If you can get through all the scientific technical stuff it really opens your eyes. My suggestion is to invest in an exceptionally good filtering and water "dechemical" system to save you all the hundreds of dollars you may be "pouring down the drain" by buying bottled water (which can actually be tap water). Good luck Farmgirl Sister!

I did a little research on "haloacetic acid" and it's very scary stuff causing birth defects and cancer.
Yep...we are off to tomorrow searching for a good water filter-Shame though that we have to do this and still having to pay for the water-Makes me angry. I did contact the MDEQ this evening and left a detailed e-mail regarding the quality of water here and what suggestions they might have. So we will see.
What's that saying about "a squeaky wheel?"
