Does anyone else out there have a "farm" under an acre? I am guessing some of you do--mine once was a bunch of pots and the stair going into my apartment. Now I am lucky enough to have a whole, big 3/4 acre all of my own. I have plum and apple trees, strawberries, currants, raspberries, blueberries (when the birds don't eat them all). My garden grows each year, with raised beds planned for the front yard this year (who needs a driveway?). I keep laying hens year-round and raise batches of meat birds every summer. I have two fiber bunnies, an assortment of cats and three happy dogs. This summer season will bring more fruit trees, bush apricots, and the "bunny barn", where I'll increase my rabbit herd. My goal is to have very little lawn to mow--where the dogs like to play will stay grass, but everything else is mine to grow on! you sound like you got it going well on 3/4 of an acre.. It's all what you make it.. We have 250 acres.. and most of it is for the horses and our cattle, but i've taken over a few spots.. :) I am following your blog :)

I only live on a 1/3 acre but for me its perfect, I have 2 chicken coops, a small orchard started with one apple tree (other died..lol) 3 raspberry bushes & a concord grape vine....2 small gardens ones for about ground vegs the other for potatoes...plus this year am doing a large herbal garden. I am also setting up the back area near the wooded area next to us as a natural wildlife area with native flowers, butterfly house, another pond area, shelters for animals so that I can get a certified wildlife area habitat. I have one duck but am hoping to get a few more this year. its amazing what a huge area 1/3 an acre is even with a house & a 50ft by 20 shop on it. i am also planning to get the back area fenced so that I can free range the chickens in the yard now they are in runs but would love to see them hang out where they want. but will fence in the garden areas during growing season so I have vegs that they can't get to!....michele'

I have amost exactly 3/4 of an acre her on Long Island. I currently have a chicken coop in the back where they have 2 seperate runs. Only 2 girls right now, but hubby just bought me a new coop for my birthday, and we have ordered 4 new chicks to be shipped to us the end of may to expand our flock to 6 hens. I have raised bed vegetable gardens in my front yard (since that is where I get FULL sun for most of the day) The backyard consists of a swimming pool, some decks off the back, and hubby is in the process of screening in one of my porches off of my sunroom. My son likes to dirtbike, so the backyard is somewhat consumed with his dirtbike track- I all it "ring around the yard" LOL.
I do most of my gardening both veggie and flower in the front yard. Works for everyone- I get the front yard all to myself and the kids have the backyard including a really cool tree house my husband built them!
Such fun to make the most of your land- no matter how big or small it is- its what you make of it!

| What fabulous ideas....this gives me lots of things to think about doing in our yard when we move. I am already thinking about container gardening since we will only have a 1/2 an acre of land. It will be odd to move from 5 acres to 1/2, but there is possiblity with everything. I can just envision all the little pieces of heaven you gals have...thanks for sharing..Erica;) |

We live in town and have a nice size back yard. I have raised bed planters that I grow lots of vegetables. I even have chickens. They allow no more than 4 chickens in the city limits. Guess how many I have - right "4". I love being a country girl in town.

Hi Cris ~ I have just over 1/3 acre and I'm in the city limits. Not ideal, but it really truly is what you make of it. I love what you have going on your 3/4 acre. We are really just beginning to get ours moving and now that the snow is finally almost all melted, I'm ready to get our garden going. We are planning to put in raspberries, blueberries, and possible another grape vine. Hoping to get part of our garage workshop converted for a chicken coop too. I guess I kinda took the attitude that my smaller homestead is preparation for the larger one down the road. :)
