I have posted on Facebook, on my own page to friends, and on MaryJanesFarm page as well about the NC SB31 and federal bill S510. Both pieces of legislation concern me as a individual, a Mother, and a Farmgirl. I capitalize because I feel that being a Mother and a Farmgirl are as much a part of me as my proper name. These bills would take away fundamental freedoms to care for myself and my family in the ways that I see fit.
SB31 would make it a felony to be a alternative practitioner in the state of NC. There would be no more midwives, naturapaths, homeopaths, Shamanic healers, etc. unless licensed by the state medical board as a doctor. They would not be licensed unless attending medical school. The bill allows for the monopolization of health care. Western medicine would be the only acceptable form of treatment to use and the only form available. Any treatment other than the allopathic form of health care would become obsolete.
I feel that this would be a slippery slope to making it impossible to utilize anything other than prescription drugs. These drugs come with a wide range of side effects which I would rather not worry about when treating my family. Many forms of alternative treatments are side effect free and extremely safe. One does not have to use these modalities, just feel that we all have a right to them.
Federal bill S510 would affect the Farmgirl in all of us. It would affect things like farmer's markets, heirloom seed stores, non GMO and organic foods. I am less familiar with this bill but equally as concerned. Local farmers should be able to make their foods available to the community without being tracked by the FDA. It would hinder us Farmgirls from sharing from our gardens with neighbors and folks from the community in need as well. I think it's sad when folks cannot even share without being "traceable."
I believe that both of these go against the very grain of being a Farmgirl. WE are big girls. I implore everyone to ban together and fight for our freedoms as individuals and Farmgirls as a sisterhood. |

Amen!
These things concern me also! Everyone I talk to about this, they look at me like I'm crazy for thinking I can change it. |

Ladies,
Just spread the word to anyone you know in NC about SB31 and everyone about S510. That one affects us all. I think that the NC bill will ultimately affect all states as well. My grandma would have been subject to a 10 years prison sentence and a $100,000 fine for giving people "down-home" remedies to folks. I understand if some might not agree with choices that others make, but our freedoms should be something that we can all agree.

wow. What ever happened to free choice? The last thing I want is my government having control of my body. I'll pass this along!

Cathy, my Daugh. & SIL have a large privately owned dairy farm about an hour N of Charlotte. They are on the farm bureau board for Rowan County. Don't know what they can do to help but I know this matter will be important to them too. I have sent you her info. Joey

Right now S510 is a law but the markets and stands are exempt. However, I think we should all be vigilant in keeping an eye on things like this so that it all stays that way. Heirloom seeds and farmer's markets should be a way of life rather than the exception to the rule.
SB 31 is being tweaked, according to some articles, to maintain our right to choose alternative practices in NC. Hopefully, everyone from NC will continue to stay on this issue as well. Write the governor if it comes to it. I did. Call her office, even. I haven't done that...YET. I hope that we can all continue to safeguard our rights and not forget how important our liberty is. |

The language was fixed on the bill here in NC so that alternative practices could still be used without the penalty of huge fines and prison time. Yay! A victory for personal liberty. |

Cathy, did you get Sues' e-mail? I sent it. She is hoping to hear from you. Says Farm Bureau should be kicking the heck out of this. Joey

Joey, I haven't been able to touch base with your daughter yet but will soon. Have been looking for my own land and had a sick boy. I will contact her as soon as I can. Thanks so much. |

Hope he is better soon. Get her when you can. I know she wants to help. I just thought maybe i gave you a wrong e-mail address. I sure hope she can help and maybe the farm bureau can put some teeth in it. Smiles, Joey
