Hello girls,
This year we decided to try planting onions. My husband suggested planting them around the perimeter of the garden to deter pests. Do you think that would work or would they fare better in rows? I am so new to gardening ( a couple of years of winging it) and would love to learn more. Thanks! (:))

Onions are pretty easy to grow, wherever you decide to plant them. I'm not sure they will do mucn to keep pests away though.
We just finished planting both our potatoes and onions. I am so glad that part is over.....it makes me feel like garden season is officially here! YEA!

we have always planted onion plants, but all the feed stores here have onion sets, which are like little bulbs. Are these just as good?

Plantin them around the garden keeps out the rabbits very well. Also it prevents them from gettin onion maggots. The little buggers can only travel a few inches, so rowed up onions are a ready made buffet for them. The gaps of the walkways around the garden prevent them from spreadin and usually starves them out pretty quickly.

There are some plants that don't like onion and I apologize because all my books are packed at the moment. For those plants, I would put them further inside. I hope someone here can remember or look them up for you. It's called companion planting. Many plants love onions so don't worry.

Thank you everyone, I appreciate the input.
Laurie, I am awaiting some companion gardening books from the library. Hopefully they will be returned soon :)
