I have seen them go for $15 here in the midwest. You are talking about live ones, right?

Yes Karla, live ones :) Getting our son into raising them--we're looking for breeding stock and one place has them (unbred) for $50 ea, I thought that was a little shocking, but. . .maybe not. . .

That seems a little high but you are on the east coats....maybe check with the 4H Extension office & see if anyone has any they would sell. When we go to the fair there is always someone selling some.

Do you belong to the AMerican rabbit association? They have a list of breeders around the country also. That might give you somewhere else to get them.

I raise Californians and New Zealands as well as Champagne D' Argent,a meat and fur breed from France,I sell my young breeding stock (8-12 weeks old) for $15 a rabbit but I go down to $10 if someone buys more than three at a time, the Champagnes are always a little more because they're harder to find.
Rabbits priced at $50.00 are probably proven pedigreed show animals, you probably don't need that but purebred and papered is good to start with if you intend to show,I would just buy young animals in that case.
I crossbreed my New Zealands and Californians and get that hybird vigor for the rabbits that I raise just for meat, they seem to have larger litters and grow faster than my purebred stoc,it all depends on what you want out of your rabbits.
I hope this helps.

Hi there, I've been researching raising meat rabbits, too. After talking to rabbit folks in my area, they all recommended going to a small animal swap. It sounds like this is a kind of "flea market" (no pun intended) for animals, and the ones in my area are full of rabbits, chickens, other poultry, etc. There is one I am going to in June that is a full fledged barnyard swap, everything from poultry and rabbits to horses, donkeys, cows and pigs. I may have to restrain myself forcibly... Anyway, the rabbit folks thought I should be able to find very nice breeding stock for about $10 to $15 per rabbit, depending on my negotiating skills and how well the seller and I get on. I plan to be very charming.

And since you are in Vermont, Sheila, I swear I remember reading an article in Yankee magazine a couple years ago about a big animal swap...some place along the VT-NY border? Sorry I can't remember the town, but you are in a VERY good neck of the woods to find like-minded people to sell you some nice rabbits!

Hi Sheila,

Small animal swaps can be a great place to find rabbits, and $10 to $15 sounds about right at a swap. I purchased a Harlequin doe last fall at a swap; she was $10.

You'll generally see higher prices when you shop at rabbit shows, in my experience.

Have fun at the swap--hope you find exactly what you're looking for!
