I have this ginormous old futon in storage and I'm just never going to use it as a bed again. It seems to me that I should be able to remove the covering and use the stuffing to fill a couple three quilts. The problem is that the cotton is loose raw cotton and I'll have to get it even to avoid a tragically lumpy quilt, but I think it might just work. Certainly a lot less spendy than buying all cotton batting!
how about doing one of those puffy pillow quilts....its where you lay the batting out between the fabric, pin it down then run a stitch across the quilt....so that when you are done it looks like a parka jacket.....man this is so hard to explain...or like they do with feather beds now a days.

Michele, that is a GREAT idea!! I hate seeing anything go to waste and re-cycling the stuffing has been on my mind for a while. I think that your idea is the best option here. My thanks!
I am so glad you understood what I was trying to say to you Annika...had the hardest time trying to get the words out so they made sense...I am an artist so I see things in my head constantly but can't always get them in words....I too have an old futon mattress before they switched to the foam that has the wonderful batting in it.......if I ever decide its time has come I will cut it up...the fabric is heavy canvas like material also....I also have a king size foam mattress in my shop I want to tear up wash the pieces & make into doggie/cat beds for our dog pound here in town....its just getting the time to do it..so it has been there for 3 years just waiting for me to get it done....Michele'
