I was wondering if there could be a new section on the forums related to volunteering/ helping out in the community?

I really like the sound of this. Not only could we get great ideas from one another but I know how inspired I get when i read about what others have done.

Good idea! There's many places people might not think of to volunteer. I'd be interested in reading what others are doing.

What a great idea. I volunteer once a week at the library, but nursing homes are always in need of loving people. tammyb

For awhile my daughter and I volunteered at one of the local animal shelters, walking dogs and playing with the kitties. She is looking forward to turning 16 so she can do it herself, without a parent having to be there (that way her dad could drop her off).
I am starting to lead a local women's Walk and Talk (through Meetup.com). It will be a way to get local women out and about on the trails and to socialize at the same time.
Over the years I've volunteered for the Park Service, Forest Service, and more. I feel proud that my daughter (15) is interested in community service and is part of the Key Club at her school. The two of us helped out at an elementary school carnival a couple of weeks ago that we have no affiliation with -- it was a listing for Key Club.
Sometimes you'd rather be home doing your own thing but afterwards it feels SO GOOD to know you've helped out kids or dogs or seniors or someone/something in your community!

A volunteer badge would be good. Some of us go oversees, fund raise for aids projects, or sponcer a Kenyan child that can not get an education without help. There are so many ways to give back. Those are just the ones I work with. |
