The hills are alive, with the sound of...

A Farmgirls on the Loose Adventure!

I am working with Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, VT, to organize a work gathering for any gals interested in a Farmgirls on the Loose adventure! The tentative date is the week of August 7-12.

This is the lodge that was begun by the vonTrapp family of "The Sound of Music"...I visited the Lodge today and it is beautiful! The vonTrapps chose a spot with scenery that is reminiscent of Austria. With this lovely scenery before me, I enjoyed a hamburger made from beef that was grown on the hillside of the Lodge. The walls of the lodge are covered with drawings and watercolors, some of scenes from the musical, some with scenes from Maria's autobiography.
The Lodge plays regular showings of a documentary entitled "The Real Maria" throughout the day, as well as a feature film each evening. They start the day with coffee and tea in the dining hall, and enjoy tea and cookies in the afternoon. A deli/bakery is on location, as well as an outdoor center, gift shop, and fitness center. They even have a pianist in the lounge come evening.

I am trying to put together an adventure similar to the one that was in the magazine last year when the Farmgirls on the Loose got together and visited the Laura Ingalls Wilder homesteads. They did some work at each site while enjoying the history and fellowship associated with the visit.

I have been in contact with Trapp Family Lodge through Rebecca Cassell, and met Maria's youngest son, Johannes, and his son Sam. They are excited to have us come and visit! What we talked about was parking our campers on the grounds and during the course of several days we would help them clear the sugar bush. We would also have a chance to learn the history of the family and the lodge, as well as some time to meet Stowe, VT. In this way, we can enjoy the area and bless the lodge as well.

I was impressed to hear that the land is being managed with both conservation and preservation in mind. It is of great importance that the lodge be used as a tourist area without becoming commercialized. There are skiing and biking trails, places to hike, gardens and local food to enjoy....all the things that we cherish as Farmgirls. It is a remarkable place to be!

Please express your interest here and I will keep you all updated on the details as we work them out. I assure you all, the view and atmosphere are worth the trip!

If you'd like to request info from Stowe, contact:

Here is a little glimpse of Maria's mountains and a shot of the Highland grass-fed beef raised by the lodge for their dining menu.

So are you thinking of camping in that area or staying at the lodge? It sounds beautiful!

This sounds interesting, but could you explain what a "work gathering" is exactly?

I have been to the lodge for lunch once. In the summer time. Every thing was so green. The winter photograph doesn't do it any justice. I had always wanted to go back and stay at the lodge. What is a work gathering? Skygirlfarmgal

Hello All....

So glad that the thread has been discovered and that we are getting responses. I am trying to put together an adventure similar to the one that was in the magazine last year when the Farmgirls on the Loose got together and visited the Laura Ingalls Wilder homesteads. They did some work at each site while enjoying the history and fellowship associated with the visit.

There are skiing and biking trails, places to hike, gardens and local food to enjoy....all the things that we cherish as Farmgirls. It is a remarkable place to be!

Let me know if you can join me the second week in August!

Sounds like a great time and it's actually someplace I might be able to go to! Do we have to have campers or can we stay at the lodge and do this? Or, can I bring a tent?

Hi Ginny-

I'm glad that you are interested. I think the date will need to be pushed off a bit so that we can get more interest. You would need a camper or you could get a room. I do not know if the lodge would offer a discount or not. I am waiting to see if there is more interest before I make final arrangements, so please subscribe to this topic so that you can get updates. I will shoot for sometime in September if that is good for the lodge staff.

I'll keep you posted...

Hello,

thankyou for telling me how to find this topic. I could come up during the days. I have gone nordic skiing at the Trapp Family lodge. It is quite beautiful there. If families come Stowe has a ski lift ride during the summer. they have also started a theater there so there are nice shows in the evening. People can hike or kayak on the surrounding lakes there is aplace to rent the equipment if you do not bring your own. The original Ben and Jerry's ice cream factory is down the road. Lots to do in the area. We live about an hour away.

The date for this work week will need to be postponed as there has not been as much interest as I had hoped. It will require some planning on my end as well as the lodge's so as soon as we get a few more gals we will nail down a date. Sam at the lodge is very interested in meeting some of the farmgirls and hosting on his hillside as we lend a hand with the sugarbush. The lodge's ideals are similar to MaryJanes so we are a good fit!

Margo-

Thanks for your interest. I don't think the cash outlay will be much. Just food, and we can cook our own if we like. I haven't organized anything like this before so I don't know just what the details will be. I really need some more interest so that I can make arrangements with the Lodge and give them some idea of how many will attend. Then we can work out details from there. I had told them I hoped for a dozen or so ladies.

Thanks! Stay tuned....

I am very interested in going, and only live in NH. But I dont know if I can manage more then my canvas wall tent at this point (Camper is in the shop and the prognosis isnt good). I have my own business and really need a date idea.

This get together has been canceled since I do not have enough farmgirls to make it happen. However, the staff at the Lodge are very interested in having us come so I would like to continue to gather interest and set something up with them either in the spring or the fall of 2012. I would LOVE for this to become an annual thing for this area.

So, please stay in touch and talk to your friends. We can use either campers or tents, we'll have showers available, and a room for communications access.
