Hi Ladies -
I was wondering if one of you who purchases the budget mix would be able to look on the package and see if the sodium content is listed? I was going to order some, but BF is on a very low sodium diet, so hate to buy it and then find out he can't have anything I make with it.
Thank you so much!

What kind of budget mix do you want to know about? I'm on a low sodium diet and struggle with most processed foods. With a little more info, I can get you the data you need.

Howdy Luanne,
Here is the link to the Whole Wheat Budget Mix. On the bottom we have 2 tabs. The default tab is the description. Next to that is "Ingredients and Nutrition Facts". http://shop.maryjanesfarm.org/store/p/48-Organic-Budget-Mix-Whole-Wheat.aspx
The Whole Wheat Budget Mix has 170 mg of sodium per serving. The serving size is 2 biscuits with about 29 servings in each box. Let me know if you need anything else.

Hi Luann,
Yes, low sodium can be a real challenge. I look at it this way... if I am allowed 1500 mg of sodium per day, that means I can have 10 items that have 150 mg sodium per serving. Or, I can have 3 servings of something that contains 500 mg. And that's ALL I can have.
I find it easier to limit my sodium at breakfast and lunch, saving at least 900 mg of sodium for my larger evening meal. Lots of fruits and veggies (fresh of course) can make a big difference. Most pasta, and other "high carbo" items tend to contain more sodium, if it's store-bought.
You can cook meat with very little sodium.
Here's another secret I found... low sodium tends to lead to low fat, so you get a double benefit.

Hi Shari -
Thanks so much for the info - I'm finding out I have to learn to cook all over again. Can't use anything from a box, can, etc. I really appreciate the advice about "banking" sodium for dinnertime - that is a big help.
Have you tried making bread without sodium? I was wondering if it would still rise OK?
Thanks again! Luanne

Mom does the bread making around here, and when you bake from scratch, you can lower the amount of sodium. The biggest problems are the the bread doesn't have a good a flavor (it tastes flat) and the texture is a little coarser.
I had a loaf of store bought bread last week that had 100 mg sodium per 2 slices and it was the same way. It's the price I have to pay to keep my body working correctly.
