Hi farmsisters!
I just received my 10lb box of budget mix and was wondering if some of you had an idea on the best way to store it until I use it all.

Hi Debbie,
The Budget Mix is freshest if used within 6 months. This is assuming it is stored in a cool dry place. (Your cupboard) Some of our customers who purchase large quantities freeze half of the Budget Mix and use the other half. Freezing will extend the freshness for quite a long time. The most important thing to do is make sure that you lock out as much moisture when storing your budget mix. If you freeze the Budget Mix you may want to have it in 2 storage bags. I don't think I will have to store it for six months tho.....It's just too good to leave sitting around! I am going to do as you suggested and put half of it in the freezer until I am ready to use it.
Going to try the Pizza Crust next!

Lorraine- the smaller versions of the budget mix come with a little pamphlet that has some recipes- but the treasure trove of recipes is the Farm Kitchen issue of the magazine which you can still order online. It's gorgeous and has awesome recipes!!

Hi Lorraine- Yes you could say that the budget mix is somewhat comparable to bisquick. It is extremely versitile and can be used from everything from biscuits to pizza crust to pull-apart bread! The Farm Kitchen Magazine is full sized and has lots of recipes. Their is a recipe pamphlet that comes with it. I know it comes with the smaller sizes. I will check to see if the bulk order comes with a recipes pamphlet. I'll let you know!

I just heard back from Brian! The recipe Pamphlet is included in all Budget Mix orders regardless of size. If for some reason it was missing, then they would be able to mail it to you :) I hope that helps!

I haven't tried Budget Mix, but I would assume it's much better then bisquick, not to hurt any one's feelings but bisquick is heavy and weird textured and nasty. It used to be good about 20 years ago but I think they have changed their recipe and it's been pretty bad for some years now. I buy Pioneer mix and it's so much butter then bisquick, so I would say, like Alee you make the same style of things as you would with bisquick (pie crust for like chicken pot pie, biscuits and the like) but I would bet that budget mix has better taste and texture then bisquick.
BTW, I like to buy "cracker" jars, that's what they have been calling them at Walmart and Target, they are clear glass rounded corner square jars, with metal screw top lids. I find the screw top keeps weavels, ants, and moisture out better then the rubber stopper style lids. Plus they don't get stuck like the rubber stoppers where you are prying and pulling till poof it flies off and so does all the stuff in the jar! lol Plus I really like the way they look on my counters. I have never bought budget mix so I don't know what it comes with or not as far as packaging and instructions go. But, for instance I buy Irish steel cut oats, and if I don't make them for a little while I will forget the nutritional information and the amounts of water ect needed. So what I did was cut out the picture on the box for identifying what was in the jar, and used clear packing style tape to tape it on to the jar, same with the instructions and nutritional info. I put each cut out on a different side of the jar to make it as visually appealing as possible. And I really like the results of what I have gotten. The clear tape gives the paper box cut outs a shiney pretty polished finished look as well! (I cover ALL that is paper not just to tape it to the jar, that way if grease from the kitchen splatters on it I can wipe it off with out it soiling the paper too).

Heather- You are absolutely right! The budget mix is leaps and bounds above bisquick- and the budget mix is so versitile. It's really amazing. Another thing I really like about the budget mix is the quality. It is consistent and of the very best quality. My items always come out great- the taste is awesome, and I know where it is coming from so I know it is made in clean conditions and a positive environment. I also know the Farm has super high quality controls. They bake something from every batch they make just to be sure that nothing has gone awry.
The tip about the type of Jars is great! We need to invest in a few more storage containers. I will look for those the next time I am out. And I really like the idea of storing in glass instead of plastic!! :)

I love storing in glass, I can't stand the smell nor the flavor that plastic gives. I never understood how people could drink or eat from plastic, when I was growing up it would almost make me vomit. I would try to refrain though as not to offend people who were serving me their food on plastic, but uhg it was hard. Plus visually it's just so much more appealing when all put together in a small space if you don't have a lot of cabinets and what not. It makes your eye flow better and doesn't look so cluttered, in my opinion.
I gradually added to my collection of jars as I went Alee. You know flylady! I liked her idea of going room by room and evaluating your home of what you need. And make lists. For my kitchen this was part of my list, evaluating how many I would need and their sizes. As each pay check went by I would add the amount of jars we could afford each time, till I got my desired amounts. On my lists of making my rooms/home the way I wanted, I started with our kitchen first, as that is the place that makes us the most healthy and if I don't like being in there we won't be very healthy! lol haha So it took me about 4 years to get all the things on my list of what I needed for my kitchen but finally completed. (I would add things that I NEEDED on priority basis to my other rooms during that time as well, but only needs that were urgent) Next I moved on to the bedroom, since in my opinion that was next most important as in my opinion that's the basis of my husband and I's relationship. I'm still working on tweaking it and still buying the last bits and pieces we need to complete what I want it to be like when I am done. And it's been about a year I've been working on it. In the meantime just getting the odds and ends I HAD to have for the bathroom it's almost complete! I was looking at it just yesterday and have decided I will go ahead and finish it, even though I really hadn't made a list for it (since it is much different then our previous bathroom, and really doesn't "need" as much, cause it already has a lot of storage, which our old bathroom had NONE! so mainly it's decor, things and was only 2 needs-candles for storms! lol) Any way, it only "needs" lol (more like wants) a glass decanter for mouth wash (cause I think it will look so much more sophisticated with it!) and one hand towel and one bathtowel (decorating pretty ones, we have plenty of old ugly ones! lol) And it will be finished. So I decided I may put off the next few pay checks to go ahead and finish it since that's all it needs to be complete! (I love the satisfaction of being "complete"). Any way, I am waaaaaaaaay off topic here. But, any way if you go room by room, and kind of make a check list of your wants and needs, prioritize and put their approx costs in order on the lists, you can kind of see how much and what exactly you need better. That way when you see it you can either mark it down (seen at Target for 4 dollars, ect) and then make a budget plan of when it can be bought. I buy a lot of this kind of stuff with our income tax as well (I budget out a certain dollar amount from the income tax every year for the big things, like say new dresser, new kitchen table, etc, and just use the bi-monthly work pay checks to fill in the small stuff-cracker jars, towels, sheets-if they are on sale, yes I even had sheets, how many the color/sizes, etc I needed, then when I see a sale, I can cross them off my lists if they have what I had on my lists!).
Oh and just one more hint while I'm still hijacking the thread, the lists also come in handy for people who ask you what kind of gifts you want! My mom has been able to contribute to my complete kitchen and bedroom a lot, cause when ever she has asked me about what we would like for say our anniversary I go to my list, and look at what would be a reasonable priced item (with in her gift budget) of what is on my lists, and it makes it so much better, then something I don't NEED in my home! Oh and I've done that with my inlaws too. However, they don't like to leave the house much, so the lists has came in handy that way cause I can say you know I would really like X this year, it cost this amount, if you give us this amount, I can go and buy it. They like that much better then going out and finding a gift! lol haha
Any way again sorry for hi-jacking the thread. But, I just wanted to say I know what it's like trying to build a "home" scrap/piece by piece!
BTW, I forgot to tell you on your other post Alee, thanks for the salt/pepper shaker tip on the chill over!

Thanks for the tips! Those are really good ideas! I am actually holding off on decorating anything too seriously since we are still renting. I am going to be saving money for a decorating budget when we get into our house. It's only 2 years off and since we don't know if we will end up in a pre-made house or get to build our own I don't want to commit to hard one way or another since it might not work in our new home. But the glass jars will work in any decor so those will be great!

Yeah most my decor is also needs. I don't like non working decor too much! lol So most my stuff will work in any home, cause I will still "need" it. So still the room by room assessment helps in getting all the things you need/want for your home to run the way you want it to.

Heather, this is also WAY off target but something you said brought back such good memories for me...I left my ex-husband when my daughter was only 2. I put myself through nursing school and college so there wasn't much extra money. Every year, I got a black & white compostition book like they use in elementary school. The 2nd weekend in Sept. my parents kept my daughter and I took the dog, lounge chair, book and compisition book and went camping by myself in my tent. During this quiet time I would re-evaluate my whole life..my relationship with God, my daughter, my family, my friends, myself and my interests. my job, my house, my car and maybe vacation. I wrote what I liked, what was working and what I needed to work on. I evaluated and listed what I NEEDED that coming year (ie: a refrigerator, or more time with my friends, etc.) and what I WANTED. I went thru every room in my house and every relationship in my life. I then made a plan on how to get it..buy things with income tax money, weekly check or what to give up so I had more time to spend with whatever. I made a 5 year plan and a 1 year plan knowing it wasn't carved in stone but it gave me a road map of where at least I thought I was going and what I wanted to accomplish. I also wrote down what I had accomplished that year (bought the refrigerator,spent more time with DD etc.) I did this until my DD was out of high school.
Well, my DD is now 33, is a wonderful woman and a good mom and I have been happily remarried for almost 17 years. My life is very different now, but occassionally I go back and look at those compisition books and smile. I used to not believe that I could do anything "on my own" (with Gods' help and supportive family and friends). Those books are such an accomplishment for me and I felt organized and that I was doing what I really wanted to do with my life. I don't do those books any more and sometimes I miss it.
Sorry for highjacking the thread too, but it all came back to me and I wanted to encourage anybody else out there who might be questioning if they can "do it." Keep the faith.
And yeah, I just bought my first MJF Budget mix today and am really looking forward to using it. Joey

I found that my ten pound bulk order fit perfect in one of those former plastic barrels from costco that the sourdough pretzels come in, seals nice and tight! I stuck my budget label on the outside for a bit of whimsy! Cute and free

Cool Joey that is exactly what I am talking about, I also do the 1 year, 5 year etc plans. We learned that in high school in a class I took too. The funny thing too is in high school most of what I put was really kind of what I wanted, but I didn't even work for some of those goals really hard and they still came about. I tell you just having the goals wrote out I think helps cause at least you know what you are working towards, and it doesn't seem as much work to get to them that way. I mean you are meandering off the path as much at least I don't think. lol And that's with every thing, from when I married, to when I started having children, etc. lol it's funny that way. But, really what's been really good about the goals like that, is I think it saves me a lot of money. Cause when I go to a garage sale or thrift store I don't automatically buy something cause I think it's a good deal (not that that wouldn't be fun! lol But!) it helps me stay focused on what I want/need to spend my money on and actually achieve what I want and need. With out a drawn out plan though you can get caught up in buying things you don't need cause it's cheap or a good deal, but if it doesn't help you to the end goal you are looking for no matter how cheap it is it was a waste of money that could of be spent on getting what you really want! At least that's what I have found. so when I am at thrifts or garage sales it's not that I don't buy things I have on my goals list, it's just that I look at things and evaluate them to think is this what would fit into my end goals, or just something I am buying on impulse or because it's a "good" deal.
I only tell other people about it though cause I think it's been the number one way I have been able to save money to buy things I truly want! Otherwise I know a lot of the bigger things I have I would of never been able to budget in.

I want to add that as a new Farmfirl, I ordered the Budget Mix in the F.A.R.M. tote bad and it came with a MJF magazine that was full of recipes for using the mix. Perfect! I have tried a few recipes and they turned out delicious. I agree with other Farmgirl reports that this product is very high quality and consistent performance. For sure, I will be ordering more. Forn those who have not tried this yet, I highly recommend a trial. Next- ChillOver!!
