Hello, I was wondering if there are any farmgirls out there who vaccinate there goats? If so what has your experience been with them? Do you recommend it? What do you Vaccinate your goats for?
Thats all the questions I can think of for now.

I vaccinate for enterotoxemia-sp?- (overeaters), tetanus & have given BOSE before-(selenium def). I think right off the top of my head that is it. I also give newborns something but willl have to look at home? Brain dead!!

I used to vaccinate with CD&T but now I've taken a more natural rearing approach and now I do not vaccinate except for an occasional shot of tetanus if any of my goats should get a terrible or dirty wound.
I never would vaccinate for soremouth because often vaccinating kids for soremouth usually brought on a big bout of soremouth and if you don't have a problem with it in your herd,it doesn't make much sense to me to bring it on but other people have had reason to use it so I won't say that you absolutely shouldn't do it if your needs call for it.
My grandmother always reared her goats without vaccines and only using herbal methods to treat worms and other ailments and she had a wonderfully healthy herd,I think there are pros and cons to both methods and so far I have not had any of the ailments in my herd that vaccines are supposed to prevent.
I'm open minded to both schools of thought,if you're interested in a more natural approach to rearing goats I would recommend Juliette De Baraclai Levy's "Herbal Handbook for Farm and Stable" and there is an article by the herbalist Susun Weed available on her website that describes how she rears her goats naturally without vaccines and using herbal dewormers and treatments,if I can locate the link I'll post it here,I just don't have it at the moment.

The only Vccine I use is CD&T. I only use it because it is a requirement for 4-H and some Shows. Other then that and some deworming I use, mostly natural alternatives and rotating different animals on each pasture. That would be it for my goats. I have used antibiotics for injuries. But that is if it is nessesary. So I guess I am somewhat down the middle.

Thank you so much for your responses! I have been raising my goats naturally for a long time now and have never vaccinated them and have never had a problem. The reason I was asking is because I am in 4H and for all show animals they have to get different vaccinations and tests done before you can show your animal. This is a stretch for me because I like to treat my animals naturally and hate giving them chemical- based stuff. I have six goats right now and none of them are show quality ( when I got my goats I got them for milk production and didn’t even think about 4H or showing .) so I am buying a show goat. My problem is I can’t very well buy a show goat, vaccinate it, run different tests, show it at fairs with a whole bunch of different animals and then bring it home to put in with my other goats who aren’t vaccinated, etc. You’re just asking for trouble if you do that. So what I end up doing is vaccinating my whole herd, which… (takes a deep breath), I hate/ don’t want to do but it is my only choice if I want to show.
So right now I am doing all kinds of research, talking to other goat owners, etc to try and learn as much as I can before I decide to vaccinate my whole herd. This is something I don’t want to jump into with my eyes closed. I love my animals dearly, and want to do what’s best for them. If I have to give up my dream of showing for there well- being I will do that. I did find a Holistic Veterinarian who lives not far from us so will talk to her also.

I found the link to the interview with goatkeeper and herbalist Susun Weed,I just adore her and thought this interview was very charming and informative,I use her treatment for mastitis (on the rare occasion my goats get it) and it works wonderfully.
My Daughter is going to get into 4-H and so I'm kind of faced with the same dilemma as you are,having to compromise on my natural rearing methods in order to accomodate the 4-H requirements,I just recently started disbudding my goats and that's been a difficult transition but overall,I think you get so much out of 4-H that it's sure worth compromising a bit,even if temporarily or partially,you can still do alot for the health of your herd in combination with some of these conventional methods that 4-H require.
Anyways,I hope you enjoy the article on Susun Weed and her goats,she does have an alternative spirituality so I apologize if it offends anyone,her herbal methods are sound though so it's worth reading even if you might disagree with her beliefs,with that said,here's the link:

We've never vaccinated our goats. We've also never shown goats either. I found a real gem of a book called The Complete Herbal Handbook for Farm and Stable by Juliette de Bairacli Levy that is awesome and full of natural rearing information (she also has one just for dogs & cats).
