Hello Farmgirls,
Some of you may have helped in the past knitting wool hats for Tibetan babies. Unfortunately the Chinese government did not renew the contract with One HEART Tibet so we are unable to send hats there anymore. Hopefully the hats we sent will be passed on and the skills they learned will carry on and help mothers and infants in the future.
I have found a nurse who travels to Mongolia each year to teach safe birthing practices and deliver medical supplies. She would be more than happy to deliver hats to the babies there along with the team she travels with.
The weather in Mongolia gets so cold (it is very close to Siberia so that tells us a little) and the government controls the heat in homes in the city so new mothers have no control over the temperature in their home when they have a new baby. Hats will be used for infants in the city as well as Nomads. I have read that the temperature can drop as low as minus 50 degrees outdoors in some places.
In 2010 the Red Cross determined that Mongolia lost 4.5 million livestock due to lack of feed from a poor year of grass growth and frigid temperatures. They have had quite a struggle there.
I would like to get as many infant hats that I can gather to her by the end of May since she will be traveling there this summer.
If any of you can help it would be very appreciated. Since it is so cold there wool fiber would be best but wool blends would be O.K. also. The hats will be hand carried around the world and delivered to very appreciative mothers who I am certain will pass them on to other infants when they are outgrown. Knit or crochet would be great in any pattern you choose. I believe infant size hats should be 16 1/2" circumference.
Let me know if you can help. A tiny hat takes just a small amount of yarn and scrap yarn works great. They are also quite fast to make. No competition in how many you are able to make. One is plenty if that is all the time or materials you have. Just think how many Mongolian infants one tiny hat could help if it is passed on when it is outgrown.

Hope you can help!

Note a few changes have happened since this post....

hat size should be 16 1/2" circumference and the deadline is being moved up to the end of April. I will have an exact deadline soon (posted on 3/26/11)

I would be happy to help Kristin! I helped out with the Farmgirl Philanthropy project, and I would love to help some more! Does it matter what kind of yarn to use? I have special baby yarn that I used for the last hats. Either way I would love to help!

Megan,
Thanks so much!
It is so cold there that wool or wool blend is best but I'm sure they could use anything we send. I'll let you decide. Just email me when you are ready to send them off.

Kristin,
I'd like to help. First, I'll need to see if I can work with a wool blend.Allergies.hehe! Second, I've never crocheted a hat before so I'll get a pattern online and see how I do with my cotton yarn and let you know. My daughter's been begging me to make her one. So this will get me motivated.
Hugs,
Marsha

Oh My! Farm girls are so wonderful!
Marsha,
Don't want you to have any allergic reactions since I know how they can mess everything up for a while so just work with whatever you can and I'm sure it will be appreciated. Hope your daughters hat turns out well. If you need help with any links for infant hats let me know and I will round some up.
Thanks again,
barnagainkristin

Oh Wow Farmgirls!
I am somewhat overwhelmed at the giving response by so many of you. I hope everyone enjoys this project as much as I do. Also I hope that you have as much fun as I do when I knit or crochet the little hats. I love thinking about the darling little Mongolian faces who will fit in them and putting well wishes and blessings into my stitches. It is so much more than just a small hand made hat. You are all truly creating a gift of love to someone on the other side of the world who you don't even know. What could be better than that!

Thank You! Thank You!

I found a wool blend that I can work with. Yippie! I will get to work on them today. I found several patterns for newborn hats. The first one I made looks more like it would fit a toddler. I'll have to find another pattern for a premie instead. lol

I'm going in for oral surgery April 1st and I'll have these to you before then. See my post under "Here's to your Health" Chronic problems. I'm needing lots of things to keep my mind focused on others right now and off myself.

Marsha,
So happy you found a blend you can work with. You must be a loose knitter like me :) I'm always afraid to share my patterns that work for me since they would probably be too small for someone else. I'm thinking about you and hope everything goes O.K. with your surgery. I will read your post.

Take Care,

It is my pleasure to host this. I was already working on it myself and thought I would see if any farmgirls would be interested in helping and look at all you wonderful souls. It is really fun to think of where they are going. Who knows maybe we will even get a picture of a little one in one of our hats. Don't know if that will happen or not but I will make sure and share it with all of you if it does.
